Animated Avatars

#1
Enabling animated avatars on peoples posts. I have several avatars that I could use, but they are animated. My current avatar also is supposed to be animated.

Just a suggestion

I've checked around in other Forums, and not all people like animated avatars. Like they can be annoying or distracting for some.

I've added a poll to the OP so that we can get a picture of how many people are in favour of animated avatars. Not necessarily to implement them, but to be able to make a calculated submission that proves support from a good size number of the Forum members.

It can be annoying to see some animated avatar but maybe with a few rules to what animated avatars you can have it could be quite good. i wouldn't mind seeing animated avatars as long as they are appropriate.

This is what my avatar is supposed to look like. No overkill or anything
Animated Avatar - I started off with a picture of dried cracked dirt, then the magic of photoshop!

Oh, by the way, I have an animated signature.. Is it annoying for you guys? I just thought of asking.

I think an animated avatar like the one dmull posted isn't annoying at all :) So something along those lines maybe.

I voted yes, but probably won't be one to use an animated avatar since I've already got an animated signature banner.

Nope. Doesn't worry me at all Vera. Great signature! Cool

Dmull's avatar is also fine. Very subtle.

MyBB allows gif files as avatar, if your .gif avatar is too huge it will be re-sized and the animation will be lost.

The maximum dimensions for avatars are: 120x120 pixels.
The maximum file size for avatars is 250 KB.

lol  un4 noticed you've got a spiffy new animated avatar.  La bombe!   Tongue

Question:  How did you manage to get it to be only 64kb?  That's pretty terrific for a Gif image. Cool

I'm personally against animated avatars, because sometimes I'm browsing on a pc with very little ram.

Also, part of my personality is I try to live very simply. I don't wear jewelry or fancy clothes and try to avoid anything that could be considered an affectation or adornment. Not saying those things are bad, they  just don't fit me personally.

However, I also recognize that there are many people that like them, and my low end box shouldn't be prohibiiting anyone else from having an enjoyable experience.

The ultimate solution: user preference. Give users the option to animate avatars the way some forums allow users to choose skins/themes/templates.

I'm not sure how hard it would be to code as I don't have much experience with myBB but if it's like most coding there's at least half a dozen ways to do it :)

i don't care weather avatars are animated or not because i can just ignore them unless the are really really obnoxious.

I would like to take this opportunity to remind anyone that doesn't want to view animated avatars, there are a number of browser plugins which you can avail yourself of to solve this dilemma.
#14
In Firefox you can disable animated images by setting the image.animation_mode to none in about:config. Note that this will disable all animated images on all pages, not just for the avatars on this forum.

@un4saken Can the animated resolution be adjusted to 150x150? All of my avatars are that size.

There you go @dmull
Max dimension is now 150x150

Changed my mind, 150x150 is too big for this theme. It's back to 120x120

Agreed. I like 120X120 better too. Looks as though the animation is working well. Cool

Is my avatar messing up the theme at all? Seems my avatar is a bit larger than others.

Your avatar is scaled down to 120x120 when displayed on the forums.

My avatar is still displayed as 150x150 on my side.
