This is just in the US I wonder what it is like in europe and asia? These businesse could be anything from plumbers to a coffee shop. It doesn't really matter what kind of business it is a website could turn a corner shop into a massive chain of shops.

For me, it's just common sense. Not every business needs a website to thrive. Besides, there is an overhead in creating and maintaining one, and that alone can account for those not willing to take the plunge despite the website relevance for their business.

When thinking about all the contractors and random tiny businesses, it doesn't seem too surprising. These places operate on word of mouth and the like. Plus, a bad website can hurt your business more than not having one. What surprises me more are tiny resturants without a website or hell large ones with one but no menu. If you're going to have one, they really need to think through what will be on it rather than just having one to have one.

I think you could really get some money out of this, with the right concept.

If you can create something that is easy to maintain for them, with low annual cost, but they still need you to set it up for a small fee! Then you show them a prototype and probably a large part of these businesses would be in for that.

And the 12% that uses social media instead of a website... meh. When i'm looking for a place, i rarely hit the facebook links, because usually its a garbage page with no info. Although that is changing lately with some more information, but usually still less than a proper website.

I think a lot of them are restaurants that don't think much of having a website with their menus on it and hours and stuff. I might have to go whale hunting ;)
