A great dot.tk experience tonight!

So tonight while I was working my way through one of my many commercial e-mail accounts discovered that one of my dot.tk domains had lapsed in September. Darn! And I liked that domain name.

So I went to dot.tk, checked whether the domain was available. And it was! GREAT SURPRISE! And I could get it for 12 months again. Then next thing of course was I had to change the name servers to gigadnsserver again, so next challenge of course was whether it was going to take 24 hours for the name servers to take affect. What are the chances I would be able to get it up and running and check on my WordPress Website immediately?

You wouldn't believe it. It was up and running instantly. I was able to update all of my plugins as well.

Wow this is such a good experience right there Genesis, I am happy that you got your domain again. I think that everyone would be happy as much as you are to get the same domain once again :)

First time it happened to me. I usually remember to check, particularly since Freenom only gives 14 days minimum advance period (not before the 14 days) for updating, so it's easy to miss the date. Also noticed that my oldest and also favourite domains will be due for renewal in two days time. Then I'll be good to go for a long while with all of my domains. Noticed a new feature with freenom when one clicks on renewal of domains it pops up all of them with the minimum advance period in days. One sees in one glance which ones to watch out for.

But recently I had an issue at Freenom Website, Domain list was blank. I wanted to change nameservers, but when I clicked to manage Domains ...it was blank. It happened several times so far. ...Did they solve it?

@"misharnet" Not sure, but their support was pretty good when I tried it after encountering another bug (profile info wouldn't update), so you might want to try contacting them.

It must be a browser issue as I've never experienced something like that before. Not once.

Well, when that happened I tried with Firefox and Chrome ...and it was the same ...now I don't have such problems. I just mentioned that ...I use free Domains only for testing purposes, so I don't get much deeper into it, when I get some issues ...but generally Freenom is good service.

I also use it for testing purposes, but also for my old and fun Websites. For the more serious ones I like dot.net sites. I wouldn't say I'm in deep really as it does have its limitations compared with Namecheap. But it hasn't really let me down functionally. It was challenging when it was taken over by freenom as the Website was not as good as it is now, it didn't have an intuitive feel as it has now and I had to search where everything was. I still have to search some times. Mind you GoDaddy is also a pain in the neck for trying to find things. Don't think I'll get another domain from them after my .xyz Website.

I also use this domain .tk , I had a few sites and still have some for testing purposes...
But the best thing about it, as you already sad is that when you are registering a domain you can enter your dns settings so you can run your site instantly. And that is pretty awesome

may be you use it as url forwarding. no ads if you use nameserver.

but sometime if we change the nameserver the domain will die because the new nameserver unresolved till unknown periode (especially if we set with NS of dnshosting)

I'm unaware they ever popped up ads before. They're still good though. Their free domains are for a year only though renewable at the end of the year. Just make sure you don't make the domain too popular as they may take it back and offer it for sale instead. :p

There may be pop up ads if you use their domain as a url redirection service. But haven't seen any if you use dns/nameservers.

That must be it Binil. As I have never used a dot.tk redirect service. Only the name servers. And they do work well. Better than GoDaddy. I'd say of the domain services I'm using GoDaddy is the slowest to propagate. By a long margin. NameCheap is much faster. Freenom is the fastest. Domainelectronic a lesser known host is also very fast.

I still have an .eu.org domain and I had problems with a free webhost, so I wanted to change the nameservers to another one.. ( next day move was done ). After that, the first webhost fixed the problem with the panel, so I wanted to move my domain back to old one.. and was strange because the move this time was really fast, I could say instantly but not really.

I've worked a lot with my domains over the holidays. I'm really amazed how fast the DNS propagated. Like immediately. I've completely thinned out my dot.tk though from around 15 to 5 domains. Reason being is that freenom (dot.tk) a few weeks ago started to check up on whether domains that have been created are being used. As that is part of the deal of a free domain with dot.tk. If it is not used, then the owner can be penalized by losing their freenom (dot.tk) account completely.

I replaced two of my favourites with dot.net and the rest I now only create if I really need it, and if not, remove it from freenom as i don't want to lose my account.

Last night I created a new dot.tk, and was totally amazed, it propagated instantly. There wasn't a waiting period.

Is there any issue with Google searches if you used dot.tk? I read it else where and its not recommended to use dot.tk?
