A new Googlebot for smartphone / mobile friendly based websites

I have just read this article over at the Google Webmasters Blog, I guess it`s nothing to be concerned about right now, but over the next year or two, it may have an impact on a lot of websites.

Over the years, Google has used different crawlers to crawl and index content for feature phones and smartphones. These mobile-specific crawlers have all been referred to as Googlebot-Mobile. However, feature phones and smartphones have considerably different device capabilities, and we've seen cases where a webmaster inadvertently blocked smartphone crawling or indexing when they really meant to block just feature phone crawling or indexing. This ambiguity made it impossible for Google to index smartphone content of some sites, or for Google to recognize that these sites are smartphone-optimized.

What concerns me is that Google, Yahoo and Hotmail are all asking for cell phone numbers in order to register accounts. So just imagine how powerful they are getting and with the techniques you've just mentioned with crawling everything, how every invasive, and also vulnerable they will be making us, particularly when one gets mistaken IDs etc and they are so awesomely BIG and we so awesomely small that it is VERY difficult to sort it out. Particularly tracking wise. I'll probably have to buy a cell phone one of these days specially for opening internet accounts. As they like to go a step further too with SMS verifications. So a cell number is not enough, it has to be a verifiable cell number.

The Banks are authenticating their customers right down to connecting them electronically like an umbilical cord, the utility companies are doing that, and now the Internet too. We're a few steps away from a modern oligarchy with all of the power being in the hands of a few very large corporations.
