To use 5.1 Android for old Phones you have to use Cyanogenmod. Is that good for Sonyphones or should I Use other ones?

Depends on the phone specs, but I think that cyanogen mod is the best for stuff like that even though phone specs might be low it should work alright I hope.

Yes. If there are optimized builds of CM for your phone I suggest you go with that, as those typically offer the extra features that you would otherwise get from just flashing mods and etc.

Depends whether there is an official Cyanogenmod build for the phone. Usually CM does improve the phone as long as it's a medium range phone. But if you're comfortable with rooting/flashing and voiding your warranty I think that you'll be fine!

Debating getting Cyanogenmod once my phone stops receiving updates & it's no longer under warranty. Is updating it hard? Also, can you still send texts, make calls and use the Play Store with it?

First off, why would you want 5.1 anyways? Its filled with crap. The best Android O/S was 4.1. Also, CM is only good up to 4.3 I tried it when I had a S3 and found it was a waste of time and it was no better then the original Android system. Battery dies quicker and the phone froze up. You best bet is to go to an ANdroid forum and check out what others are using on their Sony phones.

The title of topic i think is incorrect, cyanogenmod is a mod of android, so is android itself.

The difference is that android is general for all devices & purposes, cynogenmod is ottimizzated for specific device and uses.

Don't waste your time with cyanogenmod. I just bought an android galaxy Nexus that was using it. Battery life lasted about 4-6 hours. I tried for days to remove it and eveything that said to remove it, didn't work. I used a tool that removed it, put it back to stock. Now my battery last 8-10 hrs. I then updated the software to 4.3 and its its the highest I can go with it now. Which is fine, there is nothing special is lollipop 5.1

I think that cyanogenmod is better in any device only if they will be no longer official updated...
But also other mod are good.. like PAC,Paranoid or SlimRom.. :D

I think CyanogenMod is the best choice for older Phones. Some Phones are not updated to the latest Version of CM, but that's not a big deal.

Get a widows phone - it runs on low end hardware very well.

Wow, only 3 comments in and people are already trying to direct them to a non android device. I am sure that if he wanted a Windows phone that he would have added that into the thread.

I am not sure who would truly own a Windows phone when most people do not even like the OS.

I think you are absolutely correct. It is a very broken down version of Android, hence is why it works well on older hardware.

I had good experiences with my Sony Xperia X10 mini. It ran smooth and had nearly no stability issues. But it Depends on the RoM you are using. You need exactly the right RoM for your Phone because some might have trouble with the Hardware itself.
For example some might not be able to use the Camera or the colored Notification LED.

But overall i had a very nice experience with Cyanogenmod. It has some realy nice Features like a Button to turn on the Camera light directly from your Quickbar settings without the need of a Flashlight App. It also has a very nice Music Player. To cut the long Story short, I like Cyanogenmod much more as the normal Android, but i think thats a personal Thing.

I think custom roms are very useful when phone's os gets old and get uncompatible with apps that you must use.

Hi there.

I think that it depends on the version you want to install. I had Cyanogenmod on my old SGS-II and it was cool. More features than stock but also more problems from time to time. Issues related to modem, radio, and some chashes or reboots... but nothing that can't be solved after some Google.

In my opinion: Cyanogenmod > Stock, but AOKP (from a good ROM developer, like Omega) is even better.

Regards.
