Many complaints did rise, also from politicians, about if the privacy was at stake.
In the way the providers tried to cover up it seemed more or less harmless, but basicly it's the same like the mailman delivers a letter in your mailbox, but before doing so opens it, not really reads the informations and then puts it in the mailbox...

I'm surprised for the same reason that big players are invading your privacy that your Government hasn't made VPN against the law, as usually the collusion involves the Government as well.

I'm using VPN as well when needed, particularly when I'm traveling or using WiFI in a public place. Now and then in the past I had IP issues too with my ISP causing the dynamic IPs to have shorter duration than the international standard, causing my access to places like cPanel to log out all of the time. I found VPN solving that problem as well. I'm sorry that VPN gets a bad name at times, thinking that people like to hide their ID, but there are some very good uses for VPNs. It provides at least some protection when called for.

I think if VPN technology was easier to understand for the layman, it's use would be more ubiquitous.

I don't think VPN is rocket technology. Easy to Google it. In order to be very good and very secure, a paid VPN would probably make more sense - but of course not all paid VPNs are equal. Ditto free VPNs.

For Free VPNs I haven't used hide.me myself, but have heard good reports about it. If the reason to use it is to mask your IP, there is also Tor one can use. When one signs up for a VPN then the VPN owner will know your IP. But with Tor the masking is such that the owner doesn't know the IP. The service can be slow depending on how far you are situated from the hubs, but I used to use Tor very successfully for a couple or more years before I decided on a paid VPN.

I'm using TunnelBear when I'm connected on a public wifi, it's a cool and free VPN, you have a limit (500mb per default) but you can add 1GB by tweeting

I have a paid subscription to NordVPN, it's not the best VPN I have used but to be fair I don't use it all that often.

I only use VPN if things are blocked in my country because it can help you out with stuff. I rarely use a VPN because it does infact perform slower than average network. I only use VPN in public places where they block some websites some VPN gets passes that and i love that. It's great but in a simple response I rarely do.

I use VPN servers for different reasons.

Sometimes I use one to ensure I'm in a secure network but this is seldom.
Mainly I use one to ensure that I have a specific local for example to use sky go outside of germany or if I want to play a older pc game with my friends (old games often has the opertunity to play in local network but not over the internet...)

I host my VPN on a VPS and I use Pritunl (pritunl.com). It's open soure and very easy to setup.

I use PureVPN - a UK based VPN service. I've been using them for three years. I don't use them all of the time, mostly when I'm travelling and want to get some additional security when I use public WiFi. Also some of the Vendors I use can be anally regionally specific, so much so that my accounts get blocked. So I use the VPN to have a regional IP that the vendor is happy with. A few years ago I had some issues with the short dynamic IPs of my ISP that caused me to be logged out of cPanel and WHM. That is actually how my experience with VPN started, as it fixed the problem. I first used TOR, but it was quite slow. And then went for PureVPN. I don't think PUreVPN is the best out there - there could be better ones, but it works for me and the speed is great. I went through the issues of getting their software to work right - it didn't at first but that got sorted out. And two years ago I got a special deal for buy one year and get the second year free. I'll be renewing the service in August when it becomes due as it's worth it for me.

I am using Private Internet Access for quite some years now, is a paid service.

I assume that your point of view comes out of using a free VPN service.
Paid VPN providers deliver excellent speed and at times the speed is even better then internet providers can deliver.

Yes I talk about free vpn services but I also seen paid vpn services with bad speed.
