What would you recommend for creating a family website, it should be very easy for my wife to add pics and articles, calender events and a mailing list.

alternatively, what is the best E-Commerce (want to make grandparents order photos)

Can't add anything more to what Genesis said. Wordpress has become a all popuose tool. Once you master Wordpress you can make any type of site using the core, themes and various plugins.
