Computer Back-ups (desktop or portable)

I was just wondering how many people make back-ups of their computers? Tonight was the first time I made a backup of my desktop computer since I purchased it at beginning of 2014. Think what held me back was traditionally it was always a pain to do it, but couldn't believe how easy it was to make the backup. Windows 7 is really good with that. Think I'll do it with my laptop tomorrow.

I know that Apple has a neat feature provided all the equipment are from Apple whereby the Apple phone if backed up with an Apple laptop, can be restored 100% if the phone is lost or stolen.

Any one else backing up their computers and portable devices on a regular basis or have tips to share?

I'm always suspicious when Microsoft says I must do something. MS Office 2013 offers cloud to back up all of MS Office files on my computer. So guess that is where my resistance started, I immediately became suspicious. :p

it's funny you mention office, I installed a fresh office 2010 earlier & it auto starts the Office uploader every time I boot up, so I went into msconfig to stop it starting up (as you do) simple enough right?
well noooooooo every time I open my skydrive folder it not only starts up the Office uploader but auto resets it to boot up on start up
thanks a lot Mr Gates!

Good thing to have at home is NAS - Network Attached Storage this is your home cloud, where you can possibly use is as the backup server for home use :).

I've got an external hard disk. Two external hard disks. But I guess those aren't fail safe either.

Save your confidential document into internet is highly to get risk. Im still recommended to use hardisk to backup all of it.

Those are safer than cloud storage, because you still can get hacked your cloud account, because it is online, with external hard drive it can be stolen only when someone break into your house/office.

That's the reason why I prefer my hard disks. But to be really safe I use two.

I use dropbox or a service that's popular in my country, like skydrive I think to save my data... But I don't usually make backups and always end up regretting not making them. Last year, I had a few important files on my dropbox account and one day I decided to move them to my computer. The next day my laptop died!!!! Just my luck right. Lost them forever. So, I still don't backup my files often, but I should learn from my mistakes and start doing it. Just for seeing this thread I think I am going to go ahead and save some files right now.

I know that feeling about "loss". I had created serious backup of work files on a Maxtor external hard drive over the period of a number of years. One would have expected those things to last forever. Last year when I tried to use it it had died. That was the first time a hard disk had died on me, but a lesson learned. Gotta use two hard disks. Preferably of a different make.

Scour your local Craigslist for used 1 to 2 TB HDDs on the cheap (internals). Use SATA to USB drives to connect them to whatever you want, it's the best of both worlds.

I use MKSBackup (FREE)

- It is a front end scripting engine that fits really neatly over
+Windows NT Backup or the newer wbadmin, and for Linux machines tar.

It is really neat. Email and logging functions that you can customize.

It has allowed me to not worry about what is going on .. as I have an email with all the details every day in my mailbox - with an autorule on it if it doesn't say OK.

Link here for more information. www.magikmon.com/mksbackup/

Hope this helps for local (SATA disk backup.

I use cloud storage for backing up my files so I use Dropbox to backup with big storage and it's free I can access it even in my phone (android) I also use Google drive for extra could storage.

still waiting for an external drive to arrive so I could have backup even if I don't use cloud or If I don't have internet access

For documents, I keep files in Dropbox so that my data is stored in the cloud and on my devices.

For system backups, I prefer to use disk imaging software. My favorite is Clonezilla. I like this because I can backup individual partitions or entire disks. I like the ability to back up my computer's recovery partition, too. I also backup my Linux partitions this way.

If I have spent hours installing my list of desired programs and configuring system settings, I like to do a clonezilla backup.
