I`ve been doing a little reading and research about the possibility of translating the main website into different languages to increase traffic and generate more interest in our services.

What do you think? Would you help in transating?

I think it would be awesome!!!!! Some people don't understand english and it would be an asset to have it in different languages. Just make sure to get actual people to translate the site out because google translate or any online translator sucks big time. I can help with portuguese if you want. :)

I don't think it is a good idea Chris, since the language of the Forum is English. You may get plenty of people from different countries but we won't be able to serve them on the Forum. We'll actually be wasting their time as we will have to PM them that they need to write their posts in English. Also, since we need them to understand the rules, we won't be able to communicate with them in their language if we don't understand the language ourselves. For example in the Main Website if we sell services to someone on a translated Website, i.e. German, we'd have to understand German in order to explain any part of the TOS to them.

Better that we focus to get those who can read, write and understand English from different countries, to find their way here.

When it gets to technical explanations, when there is a dispute, or negotiation, or trying to communicate, then there is an understanding needed of the language. One can't use a dictionary to get away with not being able to serve someone in a different language. The translated page would never be as good as the one that is in English.

I'm taking this from experience from another Free host who also had a semi multi-lingual approach, matching the staff who had been available at the time to support people in Dutch, Polish, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Turkish. This had been in the heady days of free hosting in 2006-2009 when there had been plenty of staff and members available. As soon as the staff started to depart, and there were no longer staff to support the different languages, it became chaotic, out of control, full of spam, and unable to support the discussions properly. Also unable to moderate the discussions after the staff had departed. It turned into a real problem.

I'm also a bit concerned about how it would work with the forums. Unless we had a sub-forum for each language, and then we would need staff members for each of those languages, as Genesis mentioned. Also, if a certain language sub-forum was very inactive (I've seen this happen on a few multilingual forums), it might be discouraging to those who only speak that language.

We possibly could do the Polish version of the site, I could support them as well, that would bring us lots of the people, because we Poles create a lot of websites :).

Also I think that it is very good idea to translate the website to different languages.

Signed ;) Since it is rather easy to get a free hosting (or even other things, like domain or VPS) here, it is pretty attractive for young developers, which abound in Poland.

Thus, translating the whole website into different languages together with creation of some regional sub-forums is a good move and may attract more users.

Here's the problem though, we're not a blog but a Discussion Forum with the objective of providing a service where we need to understand one another in both directions in order to be successful at what we are doing. How will users be able to understand the TOS in English when the same words mean different in different languages and cultures?

If we were just selling products, then no problem. But we are selling and supporting a service that requires successful communication to make it work.

If someone needs technical support it would be interesting to see what Google translates comes up with when the staff need to work through the request, and then go through the extra hoops of translating it back into the different language. There is no comparison at all between a technical support request and a simple blog comment in a different language.

We definately would have to use something better than Google Translate, because it is not very accurate and lies most of the time.

Phew, what a relief. Great to hear Chris.

Main website only is a great idea. Will definitely increase Website traffic.

As i am planning to get a reseller from you, i also need to translate that TOS anyway.

But that will be duplicated content wouldn't it.

@Sander. As far as I can understand Chris is only looking at the main content of the Main Website in an attempt to draw traffic to the site. Language for everything else will remain English.

I did understand that too & I am willing to write a translation like that in Dutch/Netherlands.
