One of the best features of Drupal is the custom module you can write on your own. All you need to do for any module written for or you have written is drop them in the modules folder using your favorite FTP client. Once there, load the module list through your admin panel, and activate the module you want on your site.
Drupal comes with a lot of modules pre-installed, I.E. forums, blogs, etc...
If the pre-installed modules aren't suiting your needs, you can write your own. Here is a great place to start that process:
