Favicons

Does anyone have any useful tips or information on creating decent favicons?

I use Photoshop and Illustrator and am pretty proficient with both but have trouble working on the tiny files needed. I have tried working on larger files and shrinking them down, creating files in photoshop and then running them through online apps/services and going to straight to online creation systems. None of these have produced satisfying results.

The biggest problem for me is the edges - getting them smooth and properly anti-aliased.

I find the best way of making favicons is to create an image 50px by 50px in .png format, open it in Paint.net and save it as a 16px by 16px 32bit .ico file, for really excellent results it is best to create a favicon with a solid background but that isn't essential of course.

You can get paint.net here: http://www.getpaint.net/index.html

You will need this plugin to create .ico files: http://forums.getpaint.net/index.php?showtopic=927

Just click save then choose 'save as' and select "Icons (*.ico)

Next click 'select none' to clear all the options then select 16by16, 32-bit

Hope this helps a little bit.

Great suggestion that thanks Briar. Going to try it out first thing when I get home this afternoon. :good:

No problem there at all, there is also the plugin for Photoshop if you'd like to try that one out, works very well, you can download it from here:

That's the Windows format, not sure if there's a Mac version anywhere if that's what you need, hope that helps.

When I created the favicon for my website I used part of the website logo that I had already created in Inkscape. The logo was stored in SVG format so it was relatively easy to resize it. I used GIMP to save it as an ICO file containing both 16x16 and 32x32 pixel versions. I'm not sure what, if any, browser actually use 32x32 favicons so maybe it's a bit unnecessary.

Be sure there are no copyright problems, Google is not a source of FREE anything and a lot of icons that get called by their search engine are not free to use by just anyone, I doubt anyone would chase you up on it but it would not reflect well on your site if people see you're using a stolen graphic for your sites presence, just a thought there.
