Anyone like to read certain books, or like reading in general? What books are your favorites?

I tend to read the series that I see my middle school students read.

That being said, I loved the Harry Potter Series.

I used to be a bookworm. But due to my internet activity haven't read books in years. The kind of books I really enjoyed though had to do with crime fiction. Who dunnit. Here is a list of some of my favourite authors:

Robert B Parker
James Patterson
Jonathan Kellerman
Kathy Reichs
Patricia Cornwell
Karin Slaughter
Lisa Scottoline
V. I. Warshawski

I should really get back into my reading. Used to find a character I like in the books, and then was waiting for sequels all of the time.

Also loved all of the books by this famous mountaineer - GREAT sense of humour:
Joe Simpson - I started with his famous book Touching the Void but since then have read every book he has ever written. He has great talent. The movie was great but reading the book is an absolute must for any one loving to read. This guy is a born story teller with a great sense of humour as well.

Also like biographies. Used to read quite a number of historic biographies, particularly of South African history. And Brit colonial empire characters like Sir Harry Smith, etc. etc. Ironically the greatest author for me on Brit colonial characters Smith and Wolseley as well as the First Boer War is Joseph Lehman:
http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=dp_byli...=books&text=Joseph+Lehmann&sort=relevancerank. I've got quite a large collection of books on South African history, but zeroing on the historic characters.

Then also James Michener was quite good with his very voluminous historic novels. Think I've read most of them. Forgotten what they are. Also went through an Ayn Rand phase. Her books were pretty heavy going - the Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, We the living - had to reread them but found them quite inspirational.

I used to hate reading, but since a couple years I've changed my mind. I like young adult/contemporary/sci-fi/fantasy/paranormal/mistery books.

My favorite authors are:

- J.K. Rowling (The Harry Potter series)
- Gayle Forman (this lady is awesome. She's an amazing writer and such a kind human being. She totally made 2014 unforgettable to me.)
- Sophie Kinsella
- Melyssa Winchester (if you like young adult books, please check this author's book series "Count on me", she is very unknown right now, but those books are so special to me)
- Lauren Barnholdt
- Kelly Oram
- Veronica Rossi (Under the Never Sky series)
- Kerstin Gier (Ruby Red Trilogy)
- Dan Brown
- Meg Cabot

& so many more!! I've only listed some of my favorites that came to mind at the moment)

I am sure must of the users of this forum won't know who most of these names are, most of them are really popular among young adults like me. :) And others I found through goodreads. Any of you use that site to find new books? I love it! It really helped me find so many awesome books that I wouldn't have found if it weren't for that site.

Aha. I'd forgotten about Dan Brown. Just noticed he's written another book since the last one I've read by him. Deception Point. Should check it out.

Ooh, so many good-looking books and authors! I saved these to a document and I'll be looking through all of these! Thanks, all!
@"tangledmemories" I also love the recommendations on Goodreads! That site and Amazon are my first stops when I need to find book recommendations.

I just love George R.R. Martin`s Game of Thrones.
And old style novels like C. Dickens`s or R. L. Stevenson`s.

I'm into Agatha Christie, Conan Doyle, lots of old detective stuff like that - I am often really enthralled by a good mystery.
I also read sci-fi - the Doctor Who novels, Star Trek novels and other Sci Fi works such as Hitchhiker's, a very good book.
I'm also becoming slowly more drawn towards fantasy - such as Game of Thrones and Tolkein's works. I was impressed with the films so I'm considering reading the books.

I've forgotten Agatha Christie. I seem to recall my favourite character was Poirot from Belgium. I used to get the one after the other Agatha just to read all of her Poirot books.

I didn't know where to put this and I didn't see a reason to open a topic for this subject, since it's related to books... Apparently, "The Little Prince" is being turned into an animated movie. I haaaad no idea! I know this isn't the first time they make a movie out of the little prince, but it's always nice to see a different adaptation of this sweet story. It's premiering in October 2015 in France, because it's a french movie. I think everyone has read or heard about this little book at least once in their lives. For me I had to read it for school when I was still a kid. It's still one of my favorite books ever.

Here's the trailer

Thanks again everyone for all the interesting book suggestions!

@"tangledmemories" Ooh, that looks interesting! Is there an English trailer? I read the book and saw the live-action movie when I was a kid, and loved them both. I can't get into 3D animated films as much as 2D ones, but it looks like they put a lot of thought into making this film.

I don't think so... Perhaps they will eventually dub it in English or use subtitles, but maybe the first option. English people don't usually use subtitles for movies.... @"Yozora"

@"tangledmemories" Yeah, that's true, which makes me a little sad as someone in the US who prefers subbed films to dubbed ones....

You must be one of the only people. @"Yozora" I don't know many Americans but from those I know, they usually complain about having to watch movies subtitled.... I don't understand why, isn't it better to watch movies in their original language? :)

I am glad I live in one of those few European countries where they do subtitles instead of dubs. Even though they do it with cartoon movies and it gets me so mad. It being a cartoon isn't so bad with the lips moving, than when it's with real people, but I got used to it since the first time I watched my first film that it's just weird when they use voiceovers instead.

It's also a way to learn a new language. :)

@"tangledmemories" Yeah, I find it nicer to watch what the original movie was like, even if it means reading subs. As you mentioned, by the end of the movie I've generally learned a few words in another language too (or at least how they sound), which is a nice bonus. Most people around me prefer dubs, except for anime fans and foreign film fans (incidentally, both groups I consider myself a part of, though the latter to a somewhat lesser degree), but other than those groups, a lot of people here only watch dubs...

It must be nice to see subtitled movies in theaters. Here, only the niche, independent movie theaters do it. :(

That sucks. But I understand why if most people were born watching only dubbed movies it must be weird to see those little words at the bottom of the screen.

I, on the other end, am glad they sub everything. I've learned English by watching movies with subtitles (and reading books in English). And I'm trying to learn more languages by doing the same thing.

I know it must be bad for those, you too, that don't mind subtitles and have to see everything dubbed. In France, Spain, Italy, they do that too, and since I have friends from those countries when they visit me on vacation and if a movie they like is showing in theaters here, they watch them here instead of where they live because of that issue.

Yeah, at least it's made me appreciate indie movie theaters more. They tend to show more foreign movies & less mainstream, flashy Hollywood movies too, which is nice for a change.
At least the U.S. isn't the only place out there which isn't subtiles-friendly. Things could always be worse.

All this talk gave me a new idea for a thread topic...
