Can you remember the very first time you ventured online? Do you remember the first website you visited? Was it IRC, Forums, Email?

For me was ( theprodigy.co.uk ) in Autumn 1997. I got online pretty much from then at work, home internet connection (dial-up) came in 2000.

Believe me, the internet was very different back then.

well, I went to a search engine. Not sure what it was back then that I used. I was searching for free internet connection, aka dial up providers. I believe from their, I went to altavista.com. It was every computers geeks dream site. It lead me to sites where I learnt what I know today. And many many friends around the world.

Yahoo! :p My very first e-mail address. I then became a Yahoo fan for many years after that. It still has the best news reports of the search engines, although I'm not visiting it that much any longer. My Internet interests started to expand in a million directions. Now Gigarank is the Website that I spend most time on.

I think the first web site I have visited also Yahoo. I wanted to create email so I typed and loaded Yahoo.com. I did it from my first work place where I started work as account assistant. It was a huge finance company but only IT department had a leased-Line connection. Rest of us use dial-up connections.

Good lord, I really couldn't say for sure, most likely AOL as they were my ISP at the time, I know the first site I searched for with any real interest was Judas Priest dot com, man that was a while back. :)

Hmm, probably some educational site with one of my parents, since I was really little at the time. Also, disney.com, nick.com, and other kid-oriented sites. One of the first sites I remember using on my own was search.com, since there was no Google yet.

I am not sure what the first website that I visited was. I seem to remember Yahoo, but I am sure that it was something else. I think that it was actually the Groupware community site hosted by my local Internet service provider at the time. It was a site where other end-users could come together, chat, and send messages. It reminded me of the BBS that I used to run using my 9600 baud modem and Wildcat BBS software, but in a web page format. I had also used some software on my Tandy 1000 HX that permitted chat, messaging, and file downloads and cost me hundreds of dollars in long distance charges each month. It was called PC-Link, and I think that it was integrated with the Deskmate software on the Tandy computer.

Well yeah, I believe you. I was there, a tiny bit earlier. It was in 1996, at the Computer Science department of a French University. My first ever visited Website was the One of The US National Library of Medicine. Access to countless databases was priceless at that time, especially Medline (later refereed to by PubMed).

It was a nice peaceful time. 80% of websites (even more) were academic and/or of some sort of official organization. But the business crowd and their consumers were already starting to jump into the virtual World (think the trend was started when the US congress changed few laws to make that happen in 93/94.)

Mine was for finding an email host. I fell instantly in love with Yahoo, and was an ardent fan of Yahoo, together with its excellent news site, well into the 2000s. When Yahoo changed hands however - think it was around 2009 or so, it started to get clunky and clumsy as well as dragging, and even emails going down from time to time. I still have important email accounts on Yahoo, but it's no longer my main search engine. I've become a Google "whore". :p

Can't believe the progress that has been made in every respect of searching for materials from my first time in Yahoo to now. At the same time the deterioration with too much junk that is online, and because of the search engines being so commercially in function, competing with how much information they can get out of the users, they seem to be unable to filter out the junk.

Looks like I and you share a similar experience. One of the first sites I visited and used extensively was yahoo. I used to solely use Yahoo Mail and wondered why did Gmail even exist. I used to trust Yahoo search results more than the ever handy Google until one day I just switches to test the waters and voila I fell in lovve with the Google ecosystem and now I understand why people detest the aging Yahoo.

Well, I wouldn't say I"m in love with Google, its search engine is also not the best because it is commercial. I'm sure you must be as irritated as I am with the rubbish links that come up when one searches for something, or repetitive links from the same Website. But out of the search engines available, it's definitely the better one for me.
