Free Control Panels for VPS / Dedicated Servers

Here I have compiled a list of completely free control panels (cpanel/whm alternatives). All of which should run fine with our Free VPS package.

In no particular order.

1, ZPanel Kloxo - http://lxcenter.org/software/kloxo
Kloxo is one of the advanced open source and free web hosting control panel for RHEL / CentOS 5.x (32-Bit) distribution.

3, Froxlor - https://www.froxlor.org/
Froxlor Server Management Panel. The lightweight open source server management software for your needs. Developed by experienced server administrators, this open source (GPL) panel simplifies the effort of managing your hosting platform.

4, Virtualmin - http://www.virtualmin.com/
Virtualmin is a powerful and flexible web hosting control panel for Linux and UNIX systems based on the well-known Open Source web-based systems management GUI, Webmin. Manage your virtual domains, mailboxes, databases, applications, and the entire server, from one comprehensive and friendly interface.

5, Webmin - http://www.webmin.com/
Webmin is a web-based interface for system administration for Unix. Using any modern web browser, you can setup user accounts, Apache, DNS, file sharing and much more.

6, VHMC - http://www.vhcs.net/
VHCS is a open source web-based interface for easy web server administration for Linux. VHCS is designed for hosting and internet service providers and IT professionals. With VHCS you can configure your server and applications, create user with domains with a few point-and-click operations that take less than a minute.
VHCS manage Apache vhosts, DNS, email and FTP accounts, quotas, create statistics and much more.

There is Kloxo-MR , I think this should be mentioned separate since it's a different project even thought both use same core.

Also there is CentOS Web Panel, which is a nice one but their support forum is terrible. First I thought VestaCP support forum is bad but that's still I have started using CentOS web panel.

MSconfig is another many says it's the best but experienced I had here proved that those said to be soild can be F'ed up sometimes. Installing it is a B*tch too. Not something newbie can do. But once u get it installed GUI is pretty simple and nice.

Ah there is Sentora. I haven't used it but it has something to do with zPanel. I think it's quite popular too.

I think the ones DJB mentioned are the ones he tried and tested. He'll probably try others and add them as he goes along. Think he does what I do as well, instead of saying Kloxo-MR mean Kloxo-MR but just say Kloxo.

The one I'd really like him to check out is Webuzo, since Webuzo is a sister/brother of Virtualizor, the panel that comes with our VPSs. Only big negative of Webuzo however is that it is a single user panel.

Try out VestaCP.
I belive this is the best free control panel !
Suport for dns, custom nameservers, email, mysql, php, apache & nginx (proxy for better performance), ftp, hosting plans, reseller, automatic update, firewall, and a cool clean design !

I last tried out Vesta Panel in December 2014. Do you know whether it got a file manager in the meanwhile as that is the reason I ditched it, including there wasn't enough documentation available as it is a relatively new panel. Support is being charged at a hefty price. So not much along the lines of a support forum. But for the rest it looked very attractive. Loaded fast. I thought that was going to be my new Panel, until I bumped into the file manager issue and needing some answers on support questions.

They still don't have a file manager, but they are working on it. Take a look at the roadmap.

If I may ask, which Linux are you using?

I used VestaCP on a VPS with Ubuntu 14.04, and it worked perfect. No errors, no issues.

I agree, I use VestaCP on my first VPS, it's really noob-friendly and does the job. I even found setting up SSL easier than in Cpanel. Only thing is, how to edit the settings for the backups...? It just does it thing and overtime might take up all the space. Is there a way to manage it better?

1. Click on packages (from the top menu) and then click edit on every package. This way you can edit the amount of backups that will be stored. The devault value is 5, so vestacp stores the backups from the last 5 days.

2. Click on backup, then on backup exclusions and then on configure. There you can set up what you want to be excluded from the backups.

3. Click on cron, search for "sudo /usr/local/vesta/bin/v-backup-users" and then click on edit. This way you can edit at what hour the automatic backup is done, or how often the backups are done (you must understand cron jobs).Or you can suspend this cron job and it won't do any backups. You will have to do them manually.

Thanks man! That's really a comprehensive guide on backup.

I'm gonna test the cron, putting 6 in "Day". Found some info from vestaCP forum, that should work for backing up only on Saturdays.

MSconfig? You mean ISPConfig? I have never heard of MSConfig, other than the Windows utility. Please share the link, I would like to see.

If you are wanting something very close to cPanel, but free. Check out Sentora with CstyleX theme. Looks Identical to cPanel.

I love using VestaCP, I used it back before I had been able to buy Cpanel, but Vesta Panel is a pretty smooth platform besides the file manager problems, its kinda laggy. I do believe its a great CP for free though. :D
