FREE HOSTING ENDED - Gigarocket Forum and Website continues

This is to confirm that Gigarocket hosting has officially come to an end. Not sure what the plans of the owner are, but for now all of our hosting accounts have been removed and are no longer available.

In the meanwhile Chris (DJB) has moved the Website and Forum to a new hosting address in the UK. We are no longer in Germany. The Forum will continue until more certainty has been obtained regarding the future of Gigarocket. We hope that our members will stay in touch with us as who knows what the future may bring.

Our appreciation goes to Chris ( @DJB ) and to @un4saken for supporting and donating freely and generously of their time and for sponsoring quality cpanel hosting to the members of Gigarocket (2013 to 2020), FreeFTPSpace (2011-2012) and Stonerocket (2005 to 2012). We hope that this is not the end yet, however regardless of what happens wish them both everything of the best with their careers and growing families.

If any of you know of really good quality cpanel hosting that can be obtained either free or very cheap, please let us know in this discussion.

I'm truly grateful to all the admins and fellow moderators of this site for keeping the free hosting running for so long. Gigarocket's hosting was truly the best free hosting experience I've ever had. Hopefully COVID-19 will go away eventually and open up the possibility of restarting hosting.

I looked around for another quality free host, and couldn't find one which fit my needs. However, there are a lot of hosting promo codes and ads for cheap hosting on the WebhostingTalk forums Shared Hosting Offers sub-forum. I found a good deal for HawkHost on there, and they had high reviews, so that's where I've moved my sites to for now. They seem fine so far, and I don't have any complaints, but there are lots of other hosts too, so I suggest really researching whichever host you're considering moving to.

There's also a thread here about paid hosts that people might find useful.

Just beware of any paid webhosts owned by EIG, since they seem to have poor service. EIG buys smaller web hosts with great reviews, and then the quality of the hosting service (speed, uptime, customer service, etc) goes way down.

@bijanbina Although I can relate to your pain, you need to take responsibility for what happened. First of all there is the common sense rule to always make regular backups of that which is of value to you. I cannot believe in this day and age that you wouldn't have done that. No one does it for you. Also they may say they will do it for you, but things can go wrong with backups too, disks can melt down, hosting can be closed down.

Then, in the Gigarocket rules, which you said you had read and accepted at the time when you applied for your hosting account it says you're supposed to check in at the Forum regularly for announcements that may effect your hosting account. The rules also say that you are responsible for making your own backups.

I also went to the trouble of sending an e-mail to all of the hosted members, at the e-mail addresses they supplied when they applied for the hosting account.

I played around with HelioHost a couple of weeks ago and what a pain that was. Like playing games with getting space in Tommy or Johnny or Ricky Server. And Tommy being the only one worthwhile, and then to wait for a 10 minute window to get into Tommy. I ended up with space on Johnny and it was a pain with it timing out at times. It's obviously not worth it and the whole game is to get you to donate a dollar or more with the donate tool that is just about rubbed under your nose in all of the windows of HelioHost. Once you've made a donation you miraculously get space on Tommy. For me it's dishonest with the equivalent of playing charades. So as a matter of principle I've written HelioHost off.

Regarding migration of WordPress sites, nothing could be easier than the plugin All in One WP Migration Tool. For example with my Website at Gigarocket, it must have taken a few minutes to install it in my new hosting. The time that was taken up was to wait for the name servers of my domain to propagate after I had changed them. You just install WordPress and then import the backup file. It used to take ages to move a WordPress site. Now it takes almost no time. I tried many backup plugins. This one works best for me.

There are a lot of WordPress backup plugins which make it easier... I've had mixed results with them though, so I usually just backup everything manually. As in, backup the WordPress site directory (via the files manager or FTP) and the database (via PHPMyAdmin or cPanel backup), restore those on a new server, add a user to the database, and then update any changed details like database names in the wp-config.php file. There are extra steps if the domain name changes, but that's basically it. There might be some good backup plugins out there though. I've just had so many issues with them that I do everything manually now.

Wow, I'm surprised that it sounds like Heliohost and Johnny server haven't changed much since I used them, back before I found GigaRocket. :shock: I didn't have to deal with a waiting window back then, but Johnny was still frustratingly slow.

Finally when I refer to the documention I found I can migrate using RSS feed as it provides functionality to import/export from/to RSS feed (https://ibb.co/hgsrL7B)

Personally I prefer these not-popular-but-still-maintained systems as popular systems are often got targeted by attackers.Okay,one big reason is that I didn't familiar with markdown syntax.I prefer BBcode and simple html though sometimes I miss markdown for its simple code(like *Bold*).

For Heliohost as yozara has mentioned,I could say the average load is ~8 for ricky(hikes can be 10+,Johnny might be worse),which I have mentioned in Post4VPS(though apparently I'm not posting for a vps - I have little linux knowledge)

Finally did anyone tried FreeHosting.com? They require a good domain(not free ones,but .xyz is ok),but no subdomains and no ssl,no outgoing connection and no php sendmail.

After you put in the domain name you are going to use they give you the above specs you get, and then plenty of options with how you can expand this - just look at the prices I think it's already a giveaway there's something up with this as they are beyond unrealistic:

Someone else may want to take it further, but I stopped when they wanted me to sign up with my personal info. I guess one can fake it, but I have a feeling this may be a fishing expedition. I rather go with something that is more familiar to me like Binil's genuine attempt to get us a cpanel account like we used to have it:

For @binil 's hosting I'd like to watch for some time as I currently have no TLD yet and I currently I don't think the earnings will cover the spendings.Currently he is using Arc.io + Google ads for revenue.If he just need to pay the vps expenses only that is good,but as a single-user cpanel license costs $15/m,that's a good amount of money for freelancers.

BTW:
Okay.Though heliohost is blamed for its ads and more,but this host is a verified non-profit organization.That means $30 per cpanel license.And many other discounts are available in other services and platforms.

As I said before its paid for one year. So I have one year to make this work and continue to the next year.

I've got a blog up and running now. Everything works perfect. I installed the WordPress blog the long way round manually just to have a richer experience with cPanel like creating the database and database user, using File Manager to upload a zipped file, etc. The installer worked immediately. Next test was to see whether plugins can be updated and loaded fast, and indeed they can. I loaded the All in One WP Migration Plugin, and then imported an old WP Backup which I modified for Gigagenesis. So it gave me a chance to work with almost all features of WordPress and everything works OK, many thanks.
