Of course it helps a lot. But the most important thins is a high quality content.
Sitemaps only help Google to index your page, It doesn't have any relation with traffic.

I vote for this suggestion. Nothing beats high quality content, as it makes everything else happen by default. Genuine people are creating quality links. The more artificial the links are the greater likelihood that they will burn out at some or other point, or get penalized by Google when it discovers anything artificial.

Yes, And for more, Inside your quality content you can insert a keyword several times in the body (h1, h2, in the image alt). You can use plugin like Yoast to calculate how much you need to insert a keyword. And of course, You have to research a keyword before. To analyze what keyword you are capable of competing.

Site maps do nothing for you. They are a waste of time and effort. Quality content to keep users coming back and Keywords for google. Have your site linked on as many site with similar content, use facebook pages.

No, it will crawl your site regardless of a site map. Go and check your visitor logs. I see the bots crawling and indexing all of my pages and I don't use any site maps

Like I said, its the fastest way to index of post/pages. Everyday thousands of websites are set up, so its not easy for search engine to find each and every websites. Thats why Search engines like Google and Bing advice people to add sitemap to webmaster tool for faster recognizing. Your website must be good enough in SE's eyes that it is being indexed faster. One of my new website didn't get indexed for 3 days, but as soon as I added sitemap to google webmaster tool, most pages got indexed.

I have been this for over 15 years, I know what I am talking about. I don't site map any of my websites, nor do I include them into an SEO tool and they are picked up within 72 hrs. Indexed and all. The key to all of it is meta tags. Not this waste of time SEO tools.

What If i copy your contents and google indexes my website faster than you ? It will be my contents in google's eye, not yours.

Content has nothing to do with google index. It has to do with keywords and meta tags. My site has not content. hasn't had any since 2006 and its still being crawled to this day.

Site map helps in many ways. It does help your pages to get index but this is something you can do by many other ways like using your site in a popular forum signature links etc. In Webmaster tools it does a link audit.

Sitemap shows you how many pages are submitted to Google and how many pages are indexed. also I get crawl stats. shows 404 responses your site have etc.

Most important thing about webmaster tools it this is the only place Google send u messages about your site. For example penalty messages etc.
