Have SSH access on a shared hosting been possible?

One more crazy idea.
@Genesis and @un4saken as always,as they have authority.(laugh)
Recently I experimented to SSH connect my website using the SSH access section in my cpanel. It worked, showing a welcome message WELCOME TO CONTABO SERVERS!.

But it is followed a message saying SSH access has been disabled.

Just wondering,is SSH access possible on a shared hosting platform. At least,to make it happen,we need a good system to seprate users and their environments nicely as users might modify system plugins.

The best situation is users have Root access in their website but they can do nothing outside their websites.

Sorry for my bad English as always.

I doubt you'll ever find SSH access available at free shared hosts. It's a huge risk. In the days of VPS and paid hosting SSH privileges were given to our paid customers when they asked for it, but it is not available with free hosting.

@mazl There are a few free hosts out there that give ssh access, but it won't be what you're used to.

These services are usually set up by hobbyists and provide only unmanaged hosting (no cpanel) and the disc space/bandwidth is usually very small compared to modern standards. They often also have strange account policies, like requiring a request via irc/discord.

However, given all the limitations, there is still a lot of interesting things you can do with such a service, such as running a bot (if allowed) or a crontab or uptime monitor or some other small task. Also a great tool for learning for persons that don't have a machine to dedicate to any of a variety of open source systems.

You could do a search for "free shell accounts" or maybe "free shell with web space" to find something you like. In modern times some people call them 'tildes' after the ~ symbol in a Unix user directory. Here is a list of several tilde communities:

Thanks a lot as well as @Genesis .

Actually I came up this idea after trying a VPS from my friend.

I have no knowledge on linux or VPS,but having an experience in trying free hosts. And currently being happy running and trying my s9y blog.

There is a joke in China(maybe also in your country),that a linux command will "cleanup the content and you can run away"[It's ???? in Chinese.](some command that removes all the files.I didnt mention it as it is dangerous )

Another good resource for trying out Linux is http://freebox.us.to they deploy small Linux vps for free with a few open ports but the vps is erased and recycled after a time so other people can use it. It works well if you just want to try out the Linux command line or experiment with something.

Haha .... I like this take on Linux. Can't help wondering what Linus Torvalds must be thinking of those entrepreneurs who basically used his Linux to develop systems that they are handsomely paid for.

I get the feeling we're moving away from "clean Linux" as each distribution is getting heavier and heavier after every new release. Time to get Linus Torvalds back on the job to get it back to its simple basics again. So you can run away and Linux will take care of everything.

You can get very cheap VPS servers is you look for it long enough. If you're lucky, even under a dollar per month.
