Hi, I found this site while searching for ways to get better internet services for people in the "third world". Looking around it seems like the people running it have some nice ideas for service provision in return for not just money. It's great.

I plan to try and get the free hosting plan first, and use it to promote the "Friendship VPS" idea, which I posted about on the General VPS discussion thread.I hope to find others who are into the idea and would like to help develop it. I'm happy to explain more ad infinitum, so just ask anything you like.

If we can get a VPS we can then use it as an example, and show how it could make a real difference to struggling communities all over the world, once they are able to control their own internet access. I've many friends who over the years have done a lot of work on sites, only to suddenly lose their content, email accounts and sometimes even the entire domain, just because the person they were relying on to do it all for them suddenly stopped.

If we can help people to learn how to manage the main crucial parts themselves, it will make a huge difference. It would have been entirely different for those friends of mine, if they had even just had the domains registered in their own names and under their own control.

All the best,
Andy

Although your idea is admirable, it is not a fit with our Forum. Ours is a post to host business where hosting accounts are individually owned. There can't be more than one owner of a site or collaborative free hosting at Gigarank. Or a jointly owned VPS.

If this is the only reason you joined our Forum, our Forum is not the right place for you to participate. However if you are posting with the objective of obtaining a hosting account you are welcome to continue, provided that you post or contribute to discussions about other topics.

Hi Genesis,

I understand what you're saying. I don't think it will be a problem, as initially I'd use the account and be a sole owner as you say. It's just a starting point, a way to show the possibilities. I'd use it to recruit people to expand the idea.

With a VPS on your server, which of the following could I do?
  • install e.g. an instance of wordpress on its own domain, and then let someone administer that wordpress account?
  • give someone else a cpanel account so they could manage a domain they own on it
  • provide email services on a domain
[give someone an account to use in the way I currently use my hosting provider

It wouldn't be necessary to have more than one owner, as the collaboration idea would be over multiple VPSs which could be anywhere in the world. Sorry to make it complicated, but its just at the idea stage right now, so very flexible. One VPS with even just one community using it for web, email and other communications is fine.

Thanks
Andy

Suggest you read the Terms and Conditions for VPS hosting. Only you are allowed to manage the VPS. You can't do it on a collaborative basis. In other words, if anything goes wrong on it, you are the person who will be solely accountable. There can't be a joint liability.

If you check the specifications of our VPSs, they are more for individual use. RAM is only 512kb. The VPSs have been set up for individual use in exchange for posts, not for collaborative projects of the kind you have in mind. For that kind of project it may be better to approach Data Centers for free VPS space of the kind that you would like to make available. Not end users at Gigarank.

Again, Gigarank is not the right place for this discussion.

Hi, yes it looks like you're right. I'd like to do this because I like what gigarank does, but I don't know if I could post the required amount about just webhosting and so on without getting really boring or repetitive, or annoying people with all my questions. I'll wander on my way,
Have fun,
All the best
Andy
