My name is Karl and I live in TX. I want to start a website dedicated to helping preserve images of our surroundings for posterity. Sometimes things change so fast that we end up missing things we didn't even know were about to go.

Yes, that will be included, but I'm trying to create something more than just that. I want it to be a place where people can exchange ideas, tips, technical info and encouragement.

I would also like it to be a resource for those wanting to learn more about whatever areas end up being photographed.

It will definitely start with a blog. I might just make a blog with image galleries then, if the interest is there, add some kind of separate gallery feature.

I would love to have a forum but I wouldn't want to start one until I felt like enough people wanted to participate.

I remember when I was working through the WP themes two months or so ago, and these were the themes that I really liked for this kind of blog:

The top one is probably a bit high-tech, but very attractive. The bottom one is very simple.

I think I should try out minimatica one of these days.

Thanks for the suggestions Genesis. I'm very intrigued by minimatica as well and plan to give it a test drive, at least as a possibility. I really like that slider. It has given me some design ideas.
