The initial graphic design of the site or sketch is the first step in the design process of the website. In this step, all pages of the site, such as the home page, about us, contacts, the blog and all other sections of the website, have a preliminary design and what is being portrayed by the user is depicted. Then the project manager have agreed on these samples and the main stage of the design begins.

Mess around, break it, figure out what I did wrong... Trial and error. I mainly use Atom, which is free and easy. The main ingredient is confidence, you've got to figure if someone else can do it then you can (or you can download a website template and substitute stuff till you like the results). You'd be amazed where cut and paste can get you if you're only doing it for yourself.

If you're learning to be a software developer then... listen to someone else.

I am a graphic designer by trade, so we learned things like this in our introductory classes, but there are plenty of YouTube educators such as Dansky who go into interface development and good practices of the trade. Also, I don't think there is any harm in going to Dribbble or Behanced and looking at top rated works and seeing what makes them successful and learning from pre-existing designs.
