How do you come up with content for your website?

I think this is my biggest problem so far, haha :p
So much empty space, and those new themes have got so many ways (Boxes with fancy graphics, boxes with parallax images, tabs, modals, list goes on and on) to show off you content they make you want to implement each and every one of them! But I personally have great difficulty coming up with good content. I usually just go around other people's websites and "steal their ideas" - But I still kind of repeat myself over and over over multiple pages... Do you guys usually face this kind of a problem? How do you come up with extra content for your site?

Usually but not always, a client would give the content for the site. But if you are making it for yourself then what i would do is make sure that you have the basics covered. it depends what you are making your site for but i think a good rule of thumb is just to think about what your site is for/about and what the users need/want to see.

@"Tytoowns" Yeah i agree with you, it will depend on what the website is about. A good way to get around the problem of not knowing what to do is to create a plan of your website. list out the things you want in your website and any possible ideas for how the website will look. Don't add anything that you don't need, for example like repeated content. More content doesn't mean the website is any better to a website with less content.

There's some topics where I really have great difficulty coming up with stuff.
For instance, right now I'm building a site for a Virtual Airline I'm working on with a few friends of mine.
I always have a few things to write about it, but they're just a few... I certainly want to provide enough info on the home page for people to know what it's all about, but I need them to go onto other pages to improve SEO (User interaction is the biggest factor Google cares - At least I think it is).
There's not much you can say about it. You can have a paragraph about the fleet, the routes, then a third one about what more you can offer over other VAs, that's it really. From there on you need to expand on those, and there's not much you can say. Unless you can come up with ideas for more content... Once you add in a Slider, and some info on the homepage, there's not anywhere near enough info for all the other pages. Especially if it's a new project that doesn't have a large community, active pilots, large staff team, events or real-time flights to talk about.. :(

you could possibly talk about why people should use your service, what's so good about your virtual AirLine?
and maybe on those things that you do want to talk about, try to expand them and explain.

I hope that helped, atleast a little. haha :)

You could also try to persuade new people into the group to make the community larger by talking about the opportunities and experience you can get from it. this may give you more to write about and will attract a larger audience to your website since it is not just attracting current members.

I hope this helps with your website.

It's important think how your content could evolves.
For example if I start with a site that store italian recipe, trivially i could name "the-italian-food", but in future i would store also German recipe and so on: the name doesn't reflects more the site...

In every project the evolution is a central point and not so simple to determine.

If your building a site for a client. Then you need to have them provide you with content or charge extra for it. In the mean time you can place Lorem Ipsum "dummy" text in place of where your text will go. Most of the time your client will not be able to provide but once sentence, even if you ask for a full page content.

Depending on the thing, like other person said, the customer would provide you content for website they want to create. If you are creating website for yourself you would take things off other people as pretty much everyone got the same content, but in different forms, so technically stealing content from other people is not a crime if you have no idea what to put on your portfolio. I would recommend to use awwwards.com to get inspiration for designs and content solution for your website.

In my own view I would say that a client is responsible for providing the content to be used and you are responsible to presenting that information in a readily absorbed way where the visitor is engaged in the content immediately.

Now if it is your own site then it is important to follow your own heart, write about things you are passionate about and don't be afraid to let your passion shine through.

Reading a story about eating pizza on a date with a girlfriend is okay if you want to bore your family half to death but you see the same story can engage the wider audience if you give brief but detailed information on the surrounding scene, the scent of the ladies perfume how your heart raced when she smiled subtly out of the corner of her mouth.

Don't be afraid to surprise your audience and always make sure your content is respectful, insulting your audience will drive them away forever, well, unless that's our thing and you're good at being a shock jock!

In my opinion, it is better to limit the contents to only what is required. People will tend to ignore if a webpage is flooded with information. Instead, keep it easy to read and fill out the empty spaces with images and such small things. if you are using a CMS application for your website, i recommend using a theme which allows you to keep your content to a minimum (only which is necessary) but still making the pages look professional. After all, you are stumbling upon creating contents right?
