Why do you prefer Microsoft Technet & Answers.microsoft.com? :unknown:

Clue: What other techniques have you used for you to come to the conclusion you prefer it?
Why do you think it is better than the other techniques?

Microsoft Windows. They are proprietors.
they are giving good solutions compared to others.
Preferring other forum also for secondary purpose.

I've been solving tech problems for so long that I have built a network of friends and colleagues who can solve just about any problem. If I'm billing a client - most of them use some form of Windows - I try to make sure they have bought a service contract from Microsoft. This is simple prudence to help guarantee maximum up-time.

How I solve tech problems depends on the type of problem. If it is a configuration thing - I google. Particularly if it is a Linux problem. For Windows problems, I have some heuristics that I follow. Generally, you can rely on Windows to re-install things the way it wants, so uninstall + reboot works for some problems. Then there is System Restore, Startup Repair, Last Known Good. It nothing works, I can re-image the PC. I use Macrium Reflect, it is free. I create the image of the system and store it on a portable USB drive. To re-image, you boot off the CD that Macrium creates, and choose the location of the stored image. A image is great because it holds the all the Configurations you have made, so unlike a re-install of Windows, you don't have to reconfigure everything and re-install all applications. Making a monthly image is recommended.

Google of course. I've found several good answers in StackOverflow, other than that some times they come up in How To sites, like www.howtogeek.com or About.com
It also depends on the kind of problem. If it seems unexplainable I will try restoring the system to a previous date before x changes, usually after an install I wasn't so sure went well. I try to keep good maintenance of the computer through scans and file cleanups.

Since childhood the best way I've found to fix the issues is by Googling the problem and then trying to fix it by yourself. Sometimes it may mess up the thing more but most of the time it works and helps me to learn for the future. NOTE: Though,You need to have some good googling skills :p

Google works for me. Key is to ask the right questions though. One gets better at that as time goes by.

For me most of the time I would have to say I'm lucky and can quickly and easily maneuver my way through it - but as a safety net, google

Google-Fu to the rescue!

stackoverflow comes up a lot, but theres a lot of smug bastids on there. A long line of responses that are either along the lines of "did you figure it out yet - idiot?" or that address either a different issue, or in a manner that is exactly what was not requested ...

There are some answers to be had there though.

I like stackoverflow myself. Some of the best query results I've had. If Google-Fu is better, will definitely check it out. Must say it has never come up with my Google search results yet.

Aha - now I get it - just Googled Google-Fu:

Smart Googling requires finesse, a keen eye, some Boolean tricks, and a bit of jena se qua we like to call Google-Fu.

:p

I usually use the internet and like @"Genesis" says, Tom's Hardcore seems to always be helpful.

It helps that I also worked at a computer shop for a year. Gave me good knowledge with repairing and scrapping computer. I really enjoyed it while it lasted. Unfortunately we have moved away now but I still like to fiddle with my own desktop (made in 2002).

I'll go in the order below, and stop when the problem is solved.

1. Wait, then check if the problem solved itself.
2. Looking around settings and programs.
3. Google.
4. (last resort)Repair shop. Never had to use this so far though.

@"CHT" you sound like such a MS tech guy there, I wait to see if the problem manifests into something bigger or if a simple erase and restore will correct the errors of our ways.
I'm not a MS tech guy though. I just happen to be good with computers, and they don't dislike me.
