You should start your website by choosing for a good niche, like you can see in my last tutorial. Keep it as small and specific possible.
When you really want go get a lot of visitors you should make something todo for your visitors, let them stay on your website as long as possible without annoying them.
You should know who your target group is, your website should fit into that target.
Now you are thinking... Does Google care about my design? More then you think!
Google looks at hundreds of things on website to index them. Google looks at relevant/good information for her users. The better your website fits the needs of your target group the more Google likes your website.
Don't only look at how many visitors you get through Google, but also what kind of results you get from your visitors. A visitor that leaves your website straight away isn't really a visitor. You need to offer them something.
