If I don't send spam, why is my IP address blacklisted?
Many blacklistings result from the presence of hidden trojans or viruses on a computer that have access to a mail server. This is best remedied by installing anti-virus and anti-spyware software to actively detect and remove threats.
Another common reason for blacklisting involves spam that is sent through exploitable contact forms via CC/BCC/MIME injections. If you host a website on the same network as your blacklisted mail server, please check all scripts and forms for vulnerabilities.
Additionally, verify that your SMTP server does not operate as an open relay server.
Finally, if your mail server is configured to send Delivery Status Notifications , please be aware that your IP address could be hijacked to bounce spam messages to consumers. Backscatter spam occurs when a spammer sends a message to a non-deliverable recipient on your server, spoofing the from address so it appears to come from the target they wish to spam. Your server responds in kind to this spoofed sender with a non-deliverable recipient message, quoting the initial message and thereby delivering the spam to an innocent third party using your IP address. To reduce the threat of backscatter, consider disabling Delivery Status Notifications entirely or taking steps to reduce your risk of backscatter .
Lashback also monitors when spam is sent to suppression lists in violation of the CAN-SPAM act. In most cases, we will NOT allow these IP addresses to be delisted.
Before attempting to delist an IP address, please ensure the above precautions have been taken to prevent future blacklisting.
