Is it safe to delete _private, _vti_... directories?

In my public_html directory I have a bunch of directories: _private, _vti_bin, _vti_cnf, _vti_log, _vti_pvt, and _vti_txt. Some of them are empty, some contain .htaccess files, and others contain more files including password files.

I believe these are used for FrontPage Extensions. If this is correct and I have no need for FrontPage Extensions, then is it safe to delete those directories?

I would like to extend this question. Is the default content of .htaccess file associated with those FrontPage extensions as well? I have already removed several other files that I thought to have something to do with FrontPage but I have been hesitating whether I can remove contents of .htaccess file and those directories mentioned above.

Agreed with vgogo. I'd be inclined not to touch the contents of an .htaccess file either. Unless there is a very good reason to do so.
