Hi folks.
As a long-time linux user (I also use win7), I tend to check out several distributions every few months or so.
My criteria is simple: it's gotta be simple to use, and require as little fiddling as possible. As the cliche goes, "it;s gotta be something my granny could use".
I won't bore you with long lists of pros and cons of various distros...I'll only point you to the one I always end up coming back to time & time again....PClinuxOS. it's available in several different desktop flavors (kde, lxde, etc.), but my personal favorite is the Mate desktop. It just works....period.
So if you're looking to give linux a try, you can download and use it for free (of course) on a live cd...which allows you to try the full deal without installing anything.

Oh, and btw, using WINE, you can install & run a HUGE amount of windows apps and games.
