Thanks for the feedback. I still need to have a look - will do so tomorrow - however in the meanwhile have found a way you can work your way around spam comments.
You may already have set up Akismet perfectly, however if not, there are guidelines for how to set up Akismet the right way for WordPress:

In addition to Akismet, try and set your site up so that all comments get to be manually approved by only you.
If you check the
WordPress Settings under the
Discussion Tab you can tick the box for manually approving the comments so they won't appear until you have approved them and you can
mark them as spam (for Akismet to deal with) when they have been made:
Then how you would approve those is to go to your comments section in the DashBoard and approve them, delete them or mark them as spam. Don't delete them if they are spam. If you
mark them as spam Akismet will deal with them so you don't have to worry about spam from the same IPs. There is a
bulk option available where you can tick all of the spam comments and
mark them as spam. Spam is kept for 15 days and automatically deleted.
Another suggestion is to get people to register first before they are allowed to make a comment - that should work as well:
Or you can simply disallow comments by unchecking comments on the same settings page above.
That way you would have complete control over the comments and spam.
