Net Neutrality

In the US, net neutrality is not enshrined in law anymore and recently certain states and organizations are trying to get the law reinstated at both the state level and national level. What is the situation like where you live? Does your country have any laws for or against net neutrality? Do you think net neutrality laws are a good thing? Why or why not?

If it is a country with a single provider or maybe just two or three, then I'm against it as usually those are Government owned and that would mean dictatorship by default. If there are many providers that are almost equally powerful, then maybe it's not as wicked as it sounds. It may make for a better situation for the users as there would still be competition among them to keep them on the straight and narrow in interest of their users.

I basically really dislike any control, but get the feeling if the industry doesn't do it themselves, it will give Government an excuse to intervene. I'm still wondering whether we'll get into a situation in the far future where we would need to have a license to operate a Website online, and that all those visiting the Website will need to have a license to register themselves. And it would be almost impossible to escape it. That is my worst case scenario. So if one could deal with the industry control maybe that would delay Government from getting their greedy paws into the Internet mix. It's still early days for them though as tracking would be almost impossible and very expensive to lay on. But I'm worried as Governments everywhere have an ugly track record to milk money as much as they can and to control things through legislation as much as they can. I'm hoping that we may escape this as long as possible.

The FCC has made a very big mistake, removing net neutrality. I do use tor, so I don't think I should be worried, but the American population would be extremely mad

No Net neutrality would lead to ISPs and private companies collaborating. It would be against antitrust laws as it creates an unfair competitive environment.
Imagine if all roads were owned by McDonalds, and EVERYONE has to use their roads. McD's would make the roads to their restaurants faster and the roads to burger king slow gravel. Or Wendy's would engage in a trust with them to agree to have their roads faster too.

BASICALLY violates ALL antitrust laws and ethics, and the philosophy regarding it

Net Neutrality in the US has been restored. In a recent Senate vote, the Net Neutrality repeal introduced by the FCC was over turned. The vote to do this was 52-47. I've been doing some reading on S.J. Res 52 and the vote itself. While Net Neutrality seems safe, it really isn't. I am not sure when it will happen, or what will be the catalyst for it, but Net Neutrality will be held to a congressional vote. The repeal of Net Neutrality will then most likely be re invoked, as most congress members believe that NN is damaging to the economy and free market. The original bill enforcing Net Neutrality was originally introduced by Barack Obama, and many people are prejudiced against the bill because they disagree with him. Let's just enjoy it while we can.
