OK, here are my ramblings Jason.

I've got roots in South Africa too. I remember when I had just finished High School and was traveling from Johannesburg to Cape Town with two friends to celebrate and of course Sea Point, and plenty of parties with marijuana/dagga available. Then one of my friends who hadn't used dagga ever before got violently sick to the point of having to be hospitalized. That was my introduction to "dagga". It almost spoiled our holiday.

Let's face it, it is a drug. So I prefer the way they do it in the United States where it is available as a controlled drug in some of the States for medical use.

I'm sure what had happened to my friend is more of an exception than the rule, as following that when I was at University, there were plenty of friends who were using dagga at parties, or during their holidays. You probably know of dagga cookies (biscuits) as well. I've got the kind of constitution that I very rarely get intoxicated - which is probably a bit boring - so there's no real escape from reality for me. For me dagga/marijuana is a drug. I don't need it. But for other people who are in pain, I believe dagga/marijuana do have medical benefits. I'm all for that but as a controlled substance like any other medicine that can have harmful consequences. I believe taken in excess both alcohol and dagga are harmful for health. Think there's the advice not to take drugs with alcohol, so the combo of alcohol and dagga is probably not that very wise to take.

Another "truth" I believe in too is that for those who get relaxation "trip" benefits from dagga/marijuana, along the lines of not really wanting to live in a "real world", to excess, after a while and after long use, the benefits aren't that great any more, and they want to go for the next drug and heavier stuff. For those who are prone to drug addiction and experimentation with drugs, that's moving into a world of no return. Like setting oneself up for a real difficult junkie life. With harmful consequences for one's nervous system. Quite a number of junkies started with using dagga/majijuana. I don't think dagga/marijuana is necessarily bad ... but it is a drug, to be respected and to be used wisely. Some know how to use it wisely, but I'd say the majority of users don't. So I'm happy there is some law that at least helps to make it less freely available to everyone, especially to kids.
