Wow! I just spent an hour modifying various host files and have removed most of the advertisements from all my networked computers! What a great tip :D

I too use this method to block ads in my home. But in office I cant as this process requires admin access. So I use browser Plugin like Adblock plus :good: to block ads.

I using the host file method to block ads in browser as well as in apps on my Android phone. Cause I am rooted :yahoo:

If you really want to block ALL the ads, best thing to do is run Firefox with AdBlock Plus and also Privacy Badger plugins. No ads, no popups, no tracking cookies, no nothing. Once you browse the internet with those two plugins you'll ever wonder how you did without!

Will it solve my problem with Mozilla's popup? My webmail works with popup screens and as soon as I enable popup blocker, it blocks the popup screens for my webmail as well..

If it blocks your webmail popup, just click the STOP SIGN for adblock plus options in firefox, and tell it to whitelist webmail site so it doesn't block popups, easy :)

I couldn't edit my hosts file on windows 7.

What I do to get past this issue is:
1. Copy the hosts file to a different location (e.g. Desktop, My Documents, etc)
2. Edit the new file and save it
3. Copy and paste the edited file to where the original file was
You will be asked for admin permission, but it won't stop you from changing it :p

Wow, nice trick!!! Just tried it, works sweet.

Great for people with UAC/User Account Control enabled.

For everyone doing this, make sure you make a backup of your original hosts file since you wont want this file to be messed up in anyway.
You can compromise your internet connection with this.
Also, do not paste and copy anything you find on the internet in your hosts file, since a bad intenttioned person can redirect you from big and trusted sites to their own sites via your file.
So do a little research and know what you are doing before editing this file.

Another way will be to do it through the router, so all the networked computers connected to the router will have adblocking.

If you have custom firmware on your router, you can install it through some package manager like entware.
