Hi there guys.

Has anyone heard of protonmail? It is probably the safest email provider on the world. It is based in Switzerland so it is free from US laws etc. Emails are encrypted.

No, but this suggestion comes at a brilliant time for me. I'm just about fedup with all of my commercial e-mail accounts. Will definitely check it out. :good:

Just checked and looks they're full for now. Gives me a feeling of deja vu when Google first started. Am very glad Google is getting some decent competition now.

Your overwhelming response to our open beta has maxed our server capacity. We're working hard to add more servers in Switzerland, and we'll send you an invitation as soon as possible.

Wow, thats would be something that most people might were looking for. I am going there to check it out.

If it is connected to the network and it is a code, then it is never safe.

The only safe mail is the one you deliver face to face; it might be safe at certain levels, but nothing is 100% safe around the matrix.

I've been thinking afterwards that someone has just been doing a very clever marketing prompt. Hence beta. There is definitely a demand for safer e-mails as well as more simple.

What do you mean safe email? If your computer is compromised or your receiver don't using secure mail? With the standards we have at these time I don't think so we have such think like "safe internet" or "safe email".

It is safe from U.S standards and laws, and by that it is safe. Emails and accounts are encrypted which give us a little bit of safety.

Yes, this is the point and being based in Switzerland, it means that they follow very strict rules related to privacy and personal life. Also, Swiss history and future shows us that no one can bother asking them to do what you want because every corrupt person in the world, including US leaders, have money there, money that no one can trace back to their corruption, so why to touch someone who could kill your life?

If I could pay for such services from Algeria, I'd certainly use that rather than gmail, hotmail, yahoo or any other free/US based email service.

Me too. I've gone for responding for a Beta, but no response yet. Wonder whether it was just a marketing probe to see whether there's a market for it? :p

I received the following message from them yesterday. It looks like they've started a crowdfunding campaign.

Dear ProtonMail supporter,

Thank you for patiently waiting for the activation of your account while we increase capacity. Since ProtonMail beta launched one month ago, a huge number of people from around the world have requested ProtonMail accounts. The world is ready for privacy.

We want to provide free ProtonMail accounts to everyone so we have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for additional servers. If we hit our target, we should be able to accommodate everybody on our waiting list by the end of July.

With your help, we can keep ProtonMail independent, and beyond the reach of corporate interests. If you would like to contribute to our Crowdfunding campaign, you can visit it here.

This is how real change happens: every contribution, no matter how small, gets us closer to enabling privacy for everyone. Online privacy and freedom touch each and every one of us. If we all stand together, we can build the future we want.

Thank you for supporting our fight to restore privacy.

Your ProtonMail Team

That's weird. I must have received this email as well, but I didn't checked it yet.

EDIT:

Yeah I have the same email.

I have my first account set up finally. I applied on my birthday in May and received it 7 months later on Christmas Eve. The only thing was that I waited so long and had such a hard time finding any updated information that I applied for another one. I'll be interested to see if they send me another invitation. I wasn't trying to get two - I had just started wondering if I would ever even get one.

That would be funny, I think that I have used two different emails too. I have my account, and used it for fun to show off at my college. Haven;t used it since that time.

I'll be using mine - always like giving the different services a try to see how they work. Noticed on some of their release notes Q&A that they're exploring adding IMAP/SMTP services. That would be nice.
