Search Feature

I've tried to do a few searches using the myBB search feature here and I find it very limited. Like I've just made a search on "dot.tk" to see whether any previous articles have been posted on the subject, but it comes up zero.

Is there a possibility of upgrading the search feature?

Also, I had to search for the "search" feature. It seems to be hidden away in the "Forums" menu. I'd think if it was positioned separately, maybe close to the top, maybe it would be easier to find it. Also, it would help people to search on topics, and maybe avoid duplicate topics from being created.

"Search" Is under the Forum menu tab, its not hidden, just made it flows with the whole concept of the site.
However like you said search doesn't work, I never used it on this forum, and I bet it's not working for the security reasons :)

Actually I wasn't asking where it was. I was suggesting that if it was moved to a more prominent position that people will not miss it.

But more importantly, it would be nice if it could be upgraded. And I'm not suggesting from Zero to 10, just marginally better, so that if I search on dot.tk, it would come with search links. I've searched on a number of topics that came to zero. None of them were security subjects as far as I know.

I think that is pointless, because people who will need to search something, will search anyway.

Moreover like you said, that should be working, I have tried on my own, and came up with 0 links, you need to wait for a replay from staff.

Not sure what you mean with a reply from staff. I'm sure any one can reply here as this is a general deficiency with myBB search. There may be a non-staff myBB expert who knows about a plug-in.

I just want to make sure you don't shift the emphasis from the location of the search button to the actual search feature itself. When I launched the thread it was hardly intended to be a big issue as well. I was just wondering whether there could be a plug-in to upgrade this feature. If there isn't, I'm sure I can live without it.

Well, not from the staff, just tech admin. Yes everyone can replay in general, but tech admin will answer all of your questions about services and plugins installed on this forum, so yeah.

Right, there might be some one who knows mybb, but the configuration depend on the owner/techncians, who knows what to do to improve our safety'ness on this forum. Not being able to search "things" isn't the big deal, however people rarely uses that, as this forum is very simple and easy to search without this plugin.

Maybe they will upgrade or fix it in the future, who knows, we need just to wait for it and i don't shift the emphasis on where its placed.
I know your intention of the topic, don't worry.

I'd think all Forums work pretty much the same every where. It's sort of stating the obvious. All I want is a discussion on the search feature. Or if no one is interested in the search feature to hold their peace and allow the topic to die a natural death. You've admitted that you don't use the search feature. Maybe there are members like me who are using forum search features who have had the same experience and are wondering the same thing. Maybe they've come across a solution or something at another myBB Forum. If yes, I'd love to hear from them.

Aha. Someone like me who uses the search feature in Forums. My habit came from the rule at most Forums that one should search on topics before one makes a new one so as not to duplicate them. Furthermore, since I'm such a large volume poster, I like to search on previous posts I've made, or posts I've seen when I want to quote them or refer back to them. So I know of at least one Forum, where the owner felt the same way (being maybe a little fanatical as I was about "Search"). He coded the phpBB search feature that had been available to something that was marginally improved. Only impediment was that the searches are all on one page with a limit of 75 search results or something in that region. He did a really great job however. He is also quite fanatical about security. I guess all Forum owners are.

Since this is a topic close to me think I'll go Google it, maybe check up on the myBB Community Forum if there are alternatives. Or maybe there is something simple one needs to do as a user, to make it work better. But IPDesigner is of course correct as well that our technical admin and owner would need to be enthusiastic about this as well. Let's see whether we could find something that would enthuse them.

I think I tried it once too for the same reason, and haven't used it after that as it doesn't really work that well. I wonder whether one could get a Google search feature specific for the Forum? Haven't seen one in a Forum yet, but am just wondering.

You could always go and check out Sourceforge.com and see if they have any user created BB scripts that would work for you. Obviously you would have to check a script before uploading and make a few design changes but if it works then it is worth a shot.

I'm a very lazy poster, so not one for using the search feature. I think one has to be really into posting to want to use that feature.

I use it rarely and I consider myself an active poster, not that the new plugin notices 80% of my posts due tapatalk tho.
