I believe it has indeed been a rather busy (not to mention frightening!) week at Intel, especially right before CES 2018, and they are struggling to patch systems up. Though no known exploit has been made public regarding Meltdown or Spectre yet, I think the only solution for now is to update your firmware, apply updates and the like. But Spectre, as hard as it is to exploit, will be hard to patch as well and it might even take years for updates to arrive....

Yes, these are still a big issue and patches are sketchy to say the least. Here is a good article that explains the issues in some detail.
