[split] Points System

Hey!

The current question is whether we can use points for 'a la carte' account upgrades: we don't need more space (yet!!), email accounts, or domains...what we desperately need is more bandwidth...probably not 'double' as it currently stands, but maybe 25-50% more...

We're a 'hobby site' and don't (at this time) have money for a paid account, but are willing to do most anything else to bump our bandwidth up a bit so we don't run out before the end of the month (happened in July, about to happen in August)....

So, is there any way to goose just our bandwidth with the GigaPoint system? ...or any other options?

Many thnx,

OK, got it....

...but what to do about the short term? We've got another week of August & really don't want to be down all that time....:-(

So, is it possible to switch to a paid account (I can paypal you the money today) and work at getting our points up...when we get to 100 points (I was confused, thought it was 1000) can we cash them in & use that to convert our paid account to a 'point-enhanced' account (if I understand, the point-enhanced account is the same as the basic paid account?)

Upshot is that we would pay for the upgrade until we can get enough points to cash in for the additional bandwidth, but CS would be up the whole time?

Pls let me know if this is possible, a paypal account to send the money (or do I just click on the 'order' button for the Basic Hosting option) and otherwise how we should proceed....

Many thnx,

You've got to be joking Csense. Everyone would want to cash in their points. So no, that's a ridiculous idea. Bottom line here is that you knew what was going to go down as far back as 31 July. When you asked for a solution, Chris suggested you could earn extra bandwidth with making posts. If you'd started to make posts then you'd have been at a 100 points a long time ago. If you start posting right away you could get close to that point in no time.

Hey Genesis-

>>You've got to be joking Csense.

OK, well then I don't understand the difference between the two. I thought:

1) pay $2.99/month for upgraded (basic) account

or

2) get & cash in 100 points for upgraded (basic) account

So what't the difference between upgrading an account via $2.99/month & upgrading an account via points.

I've had (& will for the foreseeable future) severe time constraints for CS, so maybe a straight paid (basic) account is the way to go, at least for the short-term...

btw, if we do go for the paid account and then discover that this bandwidth jump is a passing fad, is it possible to downgrade back to the free account (if we find we don't need the extra bandwidth)?

If you can clarify the difference between the paid v. points account upgrades, I'll get with my people & will have a course of action in short order...

>>Everyone would want to cash in their points

Obviously, I really don't understand your point system...what's the point of gaining points if NOT to cash them in?

Continued thnx,

There is no clarification needed Csense. Your options are very clear and have been very clear since 31 July. You can take paid hosting if you like, but can't cash it out with points when it suits you. You can also post to double your points. Those are your choices.

Makes sense. But you didn't answer whether we can downgrade if this bandwidth surge is a fluke...

...so, I just go to the cPanel Hosting page & hit the Order button? Once the order is processed, how long could I expect to be back online?

TIA,

Update:

We have a MyBB forum that appears to have come under attack with many bogus accounts being created (thus the spike in bandwidth)...from the looks of things, there seems to be at list two distinct formats to the the account names, hence, I imagine, attackers...

The forum is not used that much, so I plain to remove it in its entirety from the site...as soon as we can get it back up...

So, we really do not -- from the looks of things right now -- need an account upgrade at all, as the target (MyBB forum) will be utterly gone...but we do want to get back up for the last week of August...

...so can I just drop $3.00 your way and pay for the last week of August, but leave it as a free account? Once the forum goes away, our bandwidth numbers should drop back down to where they were....

Pls let me know if this works for you and let me know where/how I should PayPal your cash...

Thnx again,

-CSense

Hey iGdesigner--

The problem is that we exceeded bandwidth due to fraudulent accounts created on our MyBB forum...which will come down completely as soon as we can get our site back up (down for exceeding bandwidth)...

We were going to move to a basic paid account before the cause was identified (& talked at length with Genesis), but I'm offering one month of a basic paid account ($3.00) if you'll grant us one week of (normal) bandwidth (will drop a lot once the forum is gone)...

Does this make sense? Can you help?

Thnx,

It might be possible, but our owner Chris (DJB) needs to decide. @DJB, can you look at this thread to see what we can do?

Hey iGdesigner-

many thnx for the assist...

...the bottom line is that we want the Colonialsense.com website up as soon as possible...and we'll pay for whatever an extra week of exceeded bandwidth is worth...

...and as soon as we're up, I'll excise the forum that's being hammered, and our bandwidth excesses should cease....

Thnx again,

-CSense

hey-

Also I just added an IP block for what seems to be the primary abuser...I really hate those guys!

@Csense. I've changed your bandwidth temporarily to 30GB. As a huge favour. Never to be repeated again. You have one month to get your affairs in order. Either move to a different free host that meets your needs more adequately. Or start posting to double your hosting. Or take paid hosting on a professional basis.

The 30GB is available until the end of August. To help bale you out.

This thread is almost identical to the previous one at end of July. Taking up an inordinate amount of unproductive time. Particularly on our side. Your choices in July had been pretty clear. As they are now. Please don't start a similar thread to this one at the end of September, as it will be ignored. And don't ask for one month paid hosting to be changed to free hosting. As that won't work for us either.

If I were you I will do as DJB suggested to you at end of July and I've reemphasized over and over again (ignored by you). Immediately start posting to get to your 100 points. You should have all of that sorted out in less than a week. And you'll then be on double every thing.

Many many thnx...won't happen again...

>>If I were you I will do as DJB suggested to you at end of July and I've reemphasized over and over again (ignored by you)

Not so much 'ignored' as 'unable to implement'....I misunderstood the situation in July, and unfortunately, was unable to get a clear picture until now....really really appreciate your assistance and help & will alleviate the source of the problem as soon as possible...

However, even though cPanel is showing we have some bandwidth, I'm getting:

Forbidden

You don't have permission to access /CSPage.php on this server.

Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.

...when I try to load:

http://www.colonialsense.com

...and if you want some payment for the extra bandwidth, I'll be happy to send you some $$ to compensate for your attendant hassles & whatnot...

Anyhow, if you can get our home page to load, I'll clean house and get back to normal functionality...

Thank you thank you thank you,

Your account was NEVER suspended cSense. It isn't suspended now either. There must be another problem.

Try and access your cPanel the following way and then see what you need to fix:
https://hero.gigadnsserver.com:2083/

By the way, your mention about fraud accounts have us worried now as well. I was aware of your admin e-mail account that was used fraudulently through relays and that was deleted and the problem solved some months ago, however not myBB Forum fraud accounts. Suggest you sort that out as a first priority. You should have reported that to us when they happened in the first place.

@CSense :

just CHMOD that file to 0755.

@Genesis :

don't worry bro, I don't think that he means fraud account. Its proberbly just spambots, default mybb installations get them a lot.

I disagree Sander. I know how myBB spam accounts work. The ones that are created by bots have almost "nil" value. And don't take up much space. They are extremely easy to get rid off as well. He was referring to fraud accounts that were taking up a lot of space and particularly bandwidth. So that is something different altogether.

Sander there was NO spike! He did not report a spike. Please read the whole of this thread as well as all of his support requests, particularly the one at end of July, before you make suggestions as to what needs to be done.
