We`ve tried chatboxes in the past, they never really worked out that well and was abused.

In time we may add one when the membership based increases.

I always believe a Chat Box doesn't belong with a Forum. A Forum is one way of discussion and a Chat Box should be something different, independent of the Forum. I'd also be concerned that it may lead to abuse as it is not as easily monitored as the Forum.

Hope this thread was not opened with the purpose of trolling. This is a post for host Forum. You need to make 10 quality posts in order to earn hosting. Which you won't be able to do in a shout box.

This is a debate that often splits people in half I think @___@

Personally I love it when a website (especially a social forum) has a shoutbox/chatbox system. I think it makes introductions and getting to know people way less daunting. Also I think it forms a stronger community if done right. That being said a lot of people say that they slow down posting and makes the forum eventually die because they can't last as long as a conversation in a thread. So what do you guys think? Should they be avoided like the plague? Or do you think they really help grow a community?

Also what types do you prefer? A shoutbox or a chatroom?

Chatbox is similary with spam. Cahtbox is okay for fun but useless for quality post. Spam will makes draining alot bandwith.

chatbox is great especially in social netwoking site and that's all.. Now if you think adding a chatbox in forum i guest it will reduce the functionality of your forum where as your visitor will direct automatically in chat area and their start asking questions... Moreover the quality of post will reduce also..

Finally aside from social net that have a chatboxx i guest chatbox will be best also in site that have business with technical support purposes..And for me, forum that have chatbox will i guest it cant be called forum anymore but social net partially.

^I guess it really depends on how it's run but for example the forum I've run we've never had problems with spam like that. We have a forum section specifically for for spam though so that might help keep it under control.

Here's my question: How exactly do you think it reduces post quality and why do you think that is? I'm really curious about this actually XD

Because the visitor or member will spend alot of joke via chatbox than make a quality post into the forum. Thats why some forum has been disable this features and I think you forgot one thing about one of goals to create a forum. Forum are set up to get the information that we really need. Do I right ?

Well I don't know about you but I've always thought the goal of a forum is a build a good community, and honestly I think the most effective way to do that is with some sort of instant messaging o-O

@Spelunca. This is a different kind of community. More like supporting one another with Web hosting and posting to host. Because of those objectives a large percentage of our membership are new on a daily basis. Some of them are obviously OK but there are spammers and hackers as well, we don't know. Now add instant messaging to that and you'll get plenty of risk for spamming, as well as hacking or mischief makers who are targeting our members for hacking. As instant messaging does open a door for hackers.

Not having a chat room minimizes the exposure to our members and ourselves to those kind of scripts.

Forum chatrooms / shout boxes tend to derail members activity from the forums, there is no denying this, a forum is not a discussion setting in that short term chat sense, the long term sharing of ideas and thoughts is lost in such environments.

You can create a site which is dedicated to chatrooms, these have proven to be very popular and continue to be so but they are fraught with all sorts of problems which you must consider seriously before embarking on such an endeavour. I would encourage you to do some field work investigation on the internet and discover the full scope of responsibilities involved in running such a site before you consider setting one up.

chatbox can be usefull for selling on line and to talk to potential clients live and converte them to real buyers.

On one hand they can be fun, but they tend to majorly slow websites down for me, so I tend to avoid them. Forums are much more interesting to me.

Maybe I've just dealt with different crowds because I'vce never really seen issues like that because of the shoutbox. In fact the shoutbox I'm using now I think encourages posting because it shouts a notification whenever a thread is posted. o-O Idk I think it really depends on how the staff handles it. If you're more focused on posting then you'd encourage the shoutbox less probably...I've just always liked how quickly people can make friends with instant chat ^^

@Genesis Oh I was in no way criticizing the Gigarank forums XD Hopefully it wasn't taken that way. I understand that these are intended to be professional so of course a shoutbox/chatsystem would seem out of place. And yeah, I think it does open it up to hackers maybe a bit more, but idk most shoutboxes I've seen you have to be logged into the forum to get to (honestly I hate the ones that don't require forum login, they make me really uncomfortable tbh :/)

No Spelunca. I didn't interpret it as criticism, and if it had been, that is your right to do. I'm more worried from the point of view of security. And whether it is really needed.
