The limitations of free website hosting

In life, you tend to get what you pay for, and web hosting is no exception. If you choose the free hosting route, be prepared for some common issues that come along with it.

Even the best free hosting tends to be fairly unstable, which can result in downtime. Also, providers typically place restrictions on storage space and bandwidth, limiting your site’s growth and traffic capacity. Your personal website or business website may also have slow performance.

My experience with free web hosting has been pretty good. Can certainly be better than payed hosting in many regards.
The biggest problem seems to be that if something goes wrong it might not get sorted out right away because there is often just one person that can fix it and he or she might have another full-time job, etc.

I agree @Peter. I've got a very VERY old free hosting account - a very basic one - at https://afreecloud.com/ Since 2016 I've had uninterrupted hosting from the owner KuJoe - small space but very high quality. What got me to sign up at the time was because the panel was VestaCP, a free panel cPanel alternative, and I wanted to learn more about it on the user side of it. The panel has since been changed to HestiaCP.

Any way, why I bring this up was I had some issues with getting into HestiaCP and then with my WordPress Website caching. And you wouldn't believe it, I had a response from the owner within a day of submitting the ticket. Fortunately we have a member account in addition to our HestiaCP panel account. We also have access to an account with Discord. All of the support and access to the owner on a free hosting account.

So agreed, with free hosting the obligation for providing support is up in the air, and dependent on luck and the care of the owner. Coincidentally in the end the issues with HestiaCP were because of strict security controls that didn't like my IP that much. So the owner took the security controls of my HestiaCP account down a notch and that helped. The WordPress issue was due to caching after switching to php 8.0, which I don't think WordPress is ready for yet. php 7.3 or 4 is more ideal. So at least I learned that as well. Strange how one always learns the most when problems happen. It's one of my free hosting accounts I treasure the most. I have a great admiration and respect for the owner KuJoe. He has made a big contribution to people who need free hosting consistently with great quality over many years. You can read more about him here:

Free website hosting does not provide full access compared to paid hosting.
One should always prefer VPS web hosting for their business or in general because it is a blend of the middle point of shared hosting and dedicated hosting. Each virtual server benefits from the ability to set up and configure its area as if it were completely theirs, even though they utilize single database hardware. They get a lot of freedom from this and an extra layer of anonymity for much less money than a dedicated server would cost. You can store your site assets on a facility set up to appear and behave like a solo dedicated server using VPS hosting. You can increase the capabilities of your website with VPS hosting because it offers you better infrastructure and more resources.
