Virtual reality headsets.

Its 2:00 AM and i should probably be doing college work or sleeping but recently I've seen a lot about VR (virtual reality) headsets and its interested me so much that I thought I would create a lovely post for all of you to read and discuss, I've even put some research into this. (googling haha)

Some of these headsets that i have seen are the oculus rift, the Gear VR (which is "powered" by the oculus") and also the playstation VR. Now this is very cool in "gaming" terms as it will allow players to experience alternative worlds and in depth story's like never before but i like to think more about the other possibilities that VR headsets such as these will allow.

One example is in medicine, with this technology it is allowing medical students to practice performing operations before they do anything to a real person (which i have to admit, i think it would make me more confident in doctors that will be performing operations on me) And there are other things that VR can be used for in medicine here. One thing that i think VR could be useful for is training astronauts for what it will look like in space and in/out of the space station.

A surprising thing that i found out from researching more about VR is that there is also a rather obscure use for it. it doesn't appeal to me but there's even adult content that can be downloaded and viewed through these VR headsets and i think for some people this will be a very popular feature haha. One bad thing about VR i think is that with the ability to view things such as this it will increase the amount of people that go out and do certain bad things to people as, if they can live out a fantasy where they do that in VR and believe they're are doing it then i think they will be more likely to actually go out and do it.

Anyway, what do you people think about the advancement of VR? what benefits will there be? what disadvantage will there be?

I have a Virtual Reality device, but a cheap one actually that made by Google, The popular name is Google VR. For gaming, We don't have much choice in VR gaming now, You can count how many VR games in playstore that we can download. And the game is such a monotonous game, the gameplay is repetitive.
But I don't know about Oculus Rift or Microsoft Lens.

I am interested for the future for VR because I would love to see a VR movie. Being able to look around would make the experience so much more cooler. Imagine being a character in the film as well and you would experience what person is doing. It seems like a fantastic opportunity for horror, action and just atmospheric type movies. Imagine watching Alien in VR it would be a whole new level of scariness.

VR seems like it would be really neat! I'm not a gamer, but I'd love for it to integrate with something like the Google Streetview views of famous places, and it would be great if I could take a virtual trip to the beaches of Hawaii, or the jungles of the Amazon.

That would be awesome! Just the other day me I was on Google Street view looking at machu picchu and it would be 10x cooler if you could wear a VR headset and explore. Although if the "images" are high quality then you would need a highspeed internet to be able to explore pleasurably.

With the new devices for Virtual Reality and also Augmented Reality the 3D Visualisation can be used in much more use cases. Im not a typical gamer, but I like to develop serious games for training purposes. I hope, the industry will invest more money for professional solutions.

I already saw some prototypes of industrial solutions with the HTC Vive and the HoloLens and the next yeas coul get very exciting.

Oculus CV1 owner here! :D

The most fast advantages will be related to gaming world, specially regarding simulators and horror games, but it will not stop here. In some areas like psychology, it could be a huge opportunity to help people with phobias, etc.

Regards.

I've got the Google Cardboard... and probably not the best thing to try VR on but it's cheap. Honestly, I can see the appeal, but at the same time more than about 20 minutes and my eyes start feeling strained. This is probably because I'm using my phone for the screen, but I wonder what the longer term effects are of VR.

I agree, this devices are great, but are still far from perfect. There are several models, oringinals like:OCulus, Samsung gear VR, PLaystation VR and chinese like: VR box2 and many more. My advice is don't jump on these devices only if you are a technology enthusiast or a game developer. You get sick after 15-20 minutes of using them and it does not feel nice. Still, you can buy them for reselling, as much people are looking into them now. As far as obscure things go, I think the pervs will always exist with or without VR and everybody has a pervert side wich to some extent is benefic. The real pervs are the people who go out and act on their dark fantasies. Never hurt another human being without his/her consent.

Im personally really looking forward to when it becomes mainstream and the prices go down. I've been wanting one for a really long time and haven't been able to afford it.

I recently played around with VR-headsets and tried to build some simple VR experience with Unity and really had a lot of fun doing it. What interests me most is VR working together with 3D modelling and game design and my first impressions are that VR definitely has a lot of potential in that regard.

The Vive and Oculus will both need to be hooked up to a fairly powerful PC, while the PS VR obviously requires a PlayStation 4.

I think that VR is still just game. Not tool.

Could you tell us more about why you think that way? In what ways is VR a game rather than a tool?
