When it comes to social media, I have found that Twitter really isn't all it's cracked up to be and Facebook seems to be getting harder as you draw traffic from there. I'd like to know what the opinions are for some of those that are in this forum. I've heard that identi.ca is awesome, since Google crawls it a lot, but what about others?

Totally agree with you DS. I rarely use Twitter or Facebook and when I do I'm always concerned how vulnerable I am from a security point of view. I inevitably get spammed by Twitter and Facebook in the e-mail box which name I provided to both. Facebook I think has been deliberately put together chaotically so that when one first opens an account it takes a while to figure out that one has to reset all the options that have been set to public or suffer the consequences of plenty of unwanted visitors.

First time I've heard of identi.ca and would be great if you let us know of any others. I had a quick look at identi.ca and noticed they're using a stream server http://pump.io/. So maybe we could all start our own social media and it is not impossible as it may look to us?

The best way is from forums and message boards, because you get to target the audience which matches your site and content. They are crawled frequently too, and can be counted as back links, if placed correctly.

You can create a social website with dolphin.com. It's fully customizable. Also if you click on auto installer in your cpanel, you can go to the heading social. Then click on Elgg which is similar to dolphin. I hope this helps. If you want a more powerful social website there is a way to use wordpress. Youtube has instructions on how to put it together.

Take note: you want it to go viral quickly right? then it depends on the website you are trying to advertise/promote, you must definitely target the audience whom are interested in your brand/products/services that your website offers. When you say social media, you target the common individuals who uses the internet nowadays, but for more keen minded person having a niche related in Digital World (like we do) would rather prefer to go to forums and blogs, right?

Bottom line is, when you want something to go viral, go for website with the most traffic of users whom are interested with what you are trying to present.

If you want your website to go viral, use all possible social media sites. Concentrate more on the specific one which gives you more visitors.

Facebook and Twitter in my opinion is a must for social media. Usually does the trick for me. Secret of course is to keep them up to date. Be consistent and post on a regular basis.

When it's come to specific and desired visitors, related to a specific subject, Twitter is the best for me. It all depends how do you set it and what kinds of profiles you follow. But especially webmasters and People who generally are oriented to Web design and Developing websites and applications are willing to support each others by following each others and through their websites they visitors are able to find out about you as well. At least that is my experience.

Forums are little bit tricky. It is true that if you manage to get backlink from some of them, your website get the chance to be found on Search Engine faster then usual (if it's new website) when search engine find your link in some of the posts from such forums. But what if someone said something not good about you or your site ...Search Engine will find and show it too?!

Commenting popular Blog posts, especially if you post good comment are much better then Forums.

Not all Social media sites works for all niches. But if you are developing brand then it's good to have a presence in as many social sites as possible. Because it would help you to reach more people and more credibility. But if you just targeting just a niche then you need to chose your which social accounts work for you.

Personally I don't use Twitter a lot or have a personal account but Twitter does have millions of people specially teens and those who connected with fitness, celebs etc. It's mostly for young generation. Facebook can be used for all kinds of niches. FB is used by all age groups. Then there is Tumblr which also used mostly by younger generation.

There are lots of other sites like these VK which is mostly for Russians then Youtube and Vine, Stumbleupon, Reddit and even LinkedIn.

All these sites have millions and millions of users. You just need to have a good plan for tapping into these traffic sources.

I think, that you should just try everything out what you know about. But all in all I think Youtube could be a good suggestion.

To make youtube work for you... Do it like the pros do..

Make sure you post something that people are going to watch and share... then make sure in the video you have your website linked... and post a link to your site in the description.

That simple!

One of my past clients makes his living on Youtube ( in fact he was a presentor at the last youtube awards)

I built an ios app for him and his company called " I'm Actin here" Charades app.

Actually Twitter is very good to make things go viral if you have enough followers, or big accounts retweet things.

Instagram is also another good place to make things go viral.

Youtube is the 2nd largest search engine, tonnes of traffic there.

With an interesting video that's worth watching until the last second (high retention rate) + optimization, you're bound to get some viewers.

If you want to speed things up, try advertising it on adwords, it's very cheap.
