What's with all of these sliders every where?

Almost every Website has it these days, and I think not only is it boring, but it can be a security risk, i.e. one has to watch for updates for slider plugins all of the time. Here is a blog article of how it can be a security risk:

http://blog.sucuri.net/2014/09/slider-revolution-plugin-critical-vulnerability-being-exploited.html

One thing I have about WordPress too. Some of the themes are so similar, they look a dime a dozen. AND they all come with sliders, almost in the exact same spots as well.

For me nothing can beat an HTML5 Website that has been cleanly coded (like Chris - DJB can do them too). They are solid, secure and work for the long haul. They don't have to be nursed for security risks and all of the modern WordPress vulnerabilities one finds on a day to day basis.

Unless the slides are necessary to show different products that are on sale. Or if it is a news site, and a slider is what is needed. But just to have a slider for the sake of making a site look pretty, or interesting doesn't work for me.

HTML coded websites are ok if you don't have dynamic content , but wp is ok for newbies where you - the website designer - can set everything to auto ..
Fantastico installation monitor the wp updates , and also the plugins installed update and does them both automatically
Another good option is to use auto publish plugin (Free/Paid) both are good , to keep your Fb and Twitter fans updated with new posts
You - the website owner - can focus on the content and there are many ways to help your SEO etc,,,
If you are familiar with JQuery scripts it is easy to create your own slider in minutes risk free

@Hazem. I'm happy with WordPress. Most of my sites are WordPress sites. I'm just wondering about every one having the same design with sliders. And the security risk of sliders.

Yeah, for certain uses they are fine, but a lot of the time it just feels like people have one because they don't know what else to put there.

Sliders are good, because you can put there featured information or images that might attract visitors to visit again.

I don't mind sliders on art sites like mine, but for business websites they can just look like adverts

I think the sliders work well on those magazine/news websites to show the most important highlights, or design sites to showcase some of their best work... but I agree on that, sometimes sliders are really annoying if only used just because everyone is using them... and not because it's necessary to their website.

Agreed. Sliders can sometimes be wrong, but for the most part I think they liven up the Website. Provided they don't take too much resources and the waiting time for them to download is not too long.

Gallery Sliders I can live with, never give them a second thought when I land on a site, what annoys me is sites with menus that follow me down the page and mouse over menus, they really get on my nerves, then there's the really annoying 'leave a message' crap that is showing up on more and more sites.

This is why I don't like CMS systems - particularly ones where you can download plugins written by Joe Random.

These are hastily coded freebies with little to no security assessment. With my backend system, the entirety of the server side code resides outside of the publicly accessible "www" directory. Even if I set up apache to serve php files as text you wouldn't be able to access my code.

Try to use plugins from the official CMS , avoid all the plugins that you find in every other webpage it doesn't matter if it looks awesome, you can't be sure if it has a vulnerability.

I don't use CMS systems at all. They get in my way more than they "help". That being said - I can see why some people use them, I'm an experienced programmer and database developer. My system isn't nearly as feature rich as the CMS systems, but it has everything that is needed to build a large scalable website. It just doesn't have tools to allow a non-programmer to build a website. I don't need those tools, and I'm not building sites with the goal that a non-technical person can make changes. My customers don't want that either for the most part.

Why would they want a secratary, or someone in management making design or data decisions? They hire me because their time is better spent on their business - not doing something they aren't good at. It's inefficient.

Nooooo way bucky! I can't think of anything I want more than a top notch front end designer! I like to stay on the back end. Front ends are the DEBIL! For some reason I've been pressed into service designing UI's - but hey, I'm a thousand times better any business administrator I've ever met :)

I'm sure you are. I'm also sure you won't be bad for front end either if you put your mind to it. From your posts looks as though you have a sharp eye for most things.

Well I know what coding standards to adhere to for the most part. I'm thinking I should have stuck with a Susy 2 layout instead of using flexbox this time around. It just floats and clears like most of them more or less. Oh well, at least I'll have a well tested responsive holy grail :)

Good point Jason. For me I'm still worried about security though. It is more important than ever for one to keep those security plugins of WordPress up to date. As they are a security risk.

I like the sliders though. I added this topic a long time ago though. And just noticed with the new release of WP 4.7 that there are even better sliders with new ways of sliding available in WordPress itself.

World of IT and how to's just keep evolving and getting better and better. Like from 2014 to 2016, sliders have just got better and better in a huge quantum leap. :p
