Why does my FileZilla take so long to download files?

My computer and my internet are not that slow. If I use cPanel File Manager uploads and downloads are a picnic. Like lightning fast. BUT for FileZilla it's VERY slow. Is there something in my settings that could be the reason for the slow downloads? And uploads?

Ok, its not just me then. I thought the same thing when I used filezilla. Also the reason I stopped using it along with other things. I use CuteFtp 9.

OK. That's decided then. No more Filezilla. I've got an alternative at home, so will check it out tonight. Only part that is not so good is that I've got all of my FTPs neatly sorted out in Filezilla Manager. Probably need to remove all of those now. And then FileZilla.

I always had troubles with transferring files with FileZilla. I remember when I was using Joomla a years ago ...it was a nightmare uploading Joomla installation (about 10 MB) with FileZilla ... now I upload files in .ZIP format using cPanel File Manager.

I also use cPanel File Manager. For all uploads. Easy to zip upload and unzip in File Manager. I also like the code editor in the File Manager as well.

The FileZilla was needed for my VPS account that doesn't have a cPanel. It has Webuzo. Webuzo doesn't have the same quality File Manager as cPanel File Manager. I also use Expression Web as an alternative to FileZilla at times. Expression Web sometimes allows me to edit Websites online. Depending on which one it is.

I can't recall the name of the other FTP alternative to FileZilla. Will check it out tonight and see whether it works better. Just by way of a comparison.

If you have cPanel then use sftp instead of ftp it will be lot after. I have tried to find a better alternative for filezilla several times but end up coming back to it sooner or later.

I think internet speed does that sometimes too. My net speed is like 7Mbps and sometimes I feel it take ages to download but when I use my Widnows VPS which has a 100mbps data line it's like less than a minute.

In my case I don't think it has anything to do with Internet Speed. When I do the exact same up or download with cPanel File Manager compared with File Zilla, it is many times faster with cPanel.

OK I'm at home now. This is the FTP Manager that came highly recommended. Then when I downloaded it I got happy as it works with PuTTY as well. Still have to test it though, but it looks old-fashioned enough to be a "winner" like PuTTY is for me:

If you visit the settings and go to "Transfers", there is a couple settings there that you may be able to adjust to increase performance.

Particularly
  • Maximum simultaneous transfers
  • Limit for concurrent downloads
  • Limit for concurrent uploads
  • Speed limits

Hope this helps.

Well, at least that pointed me in a direction, not sure what to do with those. Probably need to fiddle with them, but then I'm not a fiddler. Thanks anyway. At least I now have more options for my next Google session. "File Zilla how to set transfers".

Ha, as expected the search term delivered results that provide info how to download FileZilla and do the initial setup, not fiddling with existing settings.

Few Minutes later ....
Finally did find this solution though:

go to FileZilla>Edit>Settings>Transfer> Maximum Simultaneous Transfers and change the Maximum Simultaneous Transfers setting from default 2/10 to 10/10. So far so good. Haven't given FileZilla enough of a workout to really test it, but watch this space.

OK, tested FileZilla with a decent download, and it flunked badly. Still the same. Have registered with FileZilla discussion Forum, so will see what recommendations come out of there.

Here, try this one out. I have not tested it as I love my current Cuteftp. Yes, its a cracked version, its the only way I roll. I am looking for others that may work for you.

Thanks Strokerace. Think I've solved my problem with that tweak. I've just done a download of 89MB from Gigarank server to my computer using Filezilla and it took 1 minute to download!

May be I solved the problem with the tweak: Edit>Settings>Maximum simultaneous transfers default is 2/10 - make it 10/10. Totally bowled over by it. :drinks:

It previously flunked badly because I was doing it from my Gigarank VPS. When I did the download from our shared Server it was like night and day. Just learned that memory makes a BIG difference in downloading files.
