Why is Simplicity So Difficult?

I'm trying to put together a very simple webpage for a music project I'm working on.

What I really want is a free theme that will present my single splash graphic with a small header containing a few menu options to navigate to other parts of the site.

What I want it look like is something like Fabthemes' Helix [I can't post a link here], but without the slideshow, dropdowns and content in the middle of the graphic.

I'm sure Helix is a great deal more complex than I need and as a photography theme may have a lot of features that I can't use and perhaps lacks a few I want, but there are surprisingly few themes that dare to present as simple a page layout as I wish. I've looked for several days without coming up with anything better.

Do any theme mavens here have any ideas for ones more suitable for my humble site?

Many thanks for any help!

It depends on what script do you want to use. There are lots of frameworks that allows you to create simple websites in html.

Maybe your search is then more complicated for what you need. You could do a page like that without a template. Or use any of the templates I've shown you and reduce them to their simplest bare essentials. Just delete what you don't need.

I'm just going to monkeywrench about 3/4 of Helix's features into nonfunctionality and use that, I think. [sigh!]

After some initial poking around and hard thought, I think this will actually work out better than I initially expected, but I have a bit more work to do first before I get to it.

Take a look at my simple streaming radio website: http://lizardbreath.org

It has a simple logo, a simple menu system (I only use four menus, but you can add more if you like), and a few predefined content areas: one big area, left and right, and an html5 photo gallery.

You're right, it can't get more simple than this, but at the same time the design is VERY elegant.

Signed up, but then when I tried to log in it said username and password not found.

That's because I forgot to set auto-increment for the primary key on the database table. The first INSERT worked correctly because it created key number zero, but everything else tried to duplicate that key. I fixed it and you can now register and login correctly.

as for finding what works, just keep trying till you hit the nail on the head
At times I seem to be hitting the nail with my head. But you're right of course. There are many ways to skin a cat, and you just have to keep trying until you find the right way. If the one doesn't work, find another.

Forgive me if I won't deal with the specifics of the thread as I'll only try to address the question in the title: 'Why is Simplicity So Difficult?'

Abstract things are deceivingly complex. The more layer of abstraction they are, the more their complexity increases. Only those who master that complexity can have access to simplicity. That's why (I think) SIMPLICITY IS DIFFICULT. To enjoy it means to master the craft.

A moment of introspection :)
