Unfortunately yes, I think it's still harder for a non-technical person to use Ubuntu. I use Linux Mint, which is an offshoot of Debian and Ubuntu and somewhat more user-friendly, but after all these years of working on it it's still easier for a novice to put up with the weaknesses of the W*** than to use Linux.

Of course the biggest reason is marketing. No free OS will ever compete on that.

Windows is more user friendly and the the oldest one after the Macintosh OS.but also Mac developed nowadays and also used in apple devices like ipod , ipad and iphone.
Linux is newer one and it's platform build for developer interface and users.
Windows has both option of normal users and developers and I think that It has the most user friendly platform.

Still in Desktop, Microsoft Windows is the easiest one when compared to Linux or Unix.

In mobile its a different story - Windows based OS is almost out of the picture.

Windows remains the de facto OS for many users because of the following:

- Backwards compatibility: many people want their software, especially their games, released 10 or 15 years ago to still work perfectly fine on their modern computer.
- Familiar workflow: Windows works as users expect to work because they are already used to it.
- Why switch when Windows already does the job? Why would I go through the trouble of installing Linux when Windows already does everything I need a computer to do?

I personally use macOS and Linux more frequently, however, the exception being for gaming.

I like and I'm using linux, but my opinion is: too many cooks spoil the broth.
For windows the development goes in one direction. But for linux are too many lines of development.

Some examples:
Display-server: X.org, wayland
Init-system: sysVinit, upstart, systemd
Display-manager: KDE, Gnome. LightDM ......
Linux distributions: Does really anybody know, how much are available ?

The development should be go in in one direction.

Windows is more mainstream and easy to use,
You want steam? Go to the website and download it.
Linux just didn't have any room for gaming as it couldn't run windows games, But now that is changing.
Linux is able to run windows games much easier with steam proton, wine and other nifty software.
I think in 5 years Linux will be so close to windows.

If I remember right, I 've heard this statement about 10 years ago..
Sorry @pagstudios, I can't share your confidence right now, but I keep my fingers crossed,
because I would really appreciate that.

You should see Linus Tech Tips Video on it. The support has really grown. With nvidia working on drivers.
It seems promising. But i would only switch if windows applications would work without a hitch. If i cant use FL Studio or Sony Vegas then i aint switching.

I'm a KDE-lover and with Nvidia 390 driver I experience some grahical issues with Debian and Kubuntu as well.
So on my system the nouveau driver is the better choice.

By and far Windows is the most widely used home desktop operating system in the world, and is so because of it's ease of use. It's the first major commercially available operating system to use a mouse that aimed to be sold to the home computer user.

Because it's good and it has been good for a long time and from very early on, so a lot of software are written for it. Do you notice some instagramers are extremely popular, but what they do are not that unusual? if you invest a bit of time, you can possibly do a better job, but you are too late, they started early. lol

When Bill Gates decided to allow other people to write Windows software, Steve Job did the opposite. That was the beginning of the end for apple's operating system. Apple eventually returned as a sucessful business because of ipod, not its computer.

You may heard of lots of things about Windows no good, crash, not secure all that. Those can all be true if you focus on one particular aspect without comparison. But even well known open souced software companies run their daily business on Windows computers.

Windows is mostly good for what's made for ;)

I think Windows is just most used because people do not want to switch.

The reason it began gaining users is most likely because of its lower pricing and (at the time) better graphics/appearance.

Windows is easier to use for people without a lot of knowledge of computers, has greater compatibility of games and software, an old version of software works without problems on windows while on MAC OS X if your system is up to date it will ask for a version newer software, and lower cost compared to apple computers, and if you compare it to linux for people without knowledge windows is easier to install software.
Windows also has more support, people around you can help you solve a problem, while on linux it is not just anyone who could help you.
