Windows 10 had been a free upgrade to Windows 7 and 8.1 users, and you can updated until the end of the month.
I just updated 2 virtual machines.

Now that is news to me! How can one upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 10 FOR FREE - do you have a link available?

I thought the free upgrade ended in July last year and the free upgrade after that date was only available to people with disabilities.

If you have a regular free upgrade link available however, that would be awesome.

Is this the default version like Home? I'm glad that I have participated in the Windows Insider to get myself Windows 10 Pro.

I have a feeling I won't be using Windows 10, like I'll skip one generation as that's about the time that I'll be ready for an upgrade. For now anyway - time my change my mind depending on whether I need it or not. For now there's no need for it yet. :p

It's true, although M$ are not advertising it.

You can upgrade from 7/8 to 10 without paying. Goes to show that M$ have their reasons for extending the upgrade offer without charge.

Maybe it's because they are struggling to control pirated versions of Windows 7.

That is good news, I got my Windows 10 by upgradi g from Windows 8 last year, and it never ask for activation since than. If the free upgrade continues then, that is really good news for me, as I still have one notebook that needs to be uograded to Windows 10

@"c0nvct" Thanks for your post. I was in one weak moment contemplating upgrading my desktop at home to Windows 10 (from Windows 7). I reinstalled the Windows 7 OS a few months ago, and decided not to go for updates since that would have been very complicated involving a potential load that would have worn my computer system down. Like one can do it, but it's a long process to get Windows 7 updates to load and one must know what one is doing. So while I was away I thought maybe an upgrade to Windows 10 may be a better idea - probably the same thing Windows 10 being a HUGE update of Windows 7 and 8.1. Until I read your post and well that sort of sobered me up. Think I'm going to continue with no updates for long as I can at the risk of an evil takeover - just make sure I make regular backups. You can't believe how fast my computer system is with a Windows 7 without the bloat that comes with the cumulative updates.

I never actually thought about it but what if the user upgrading from windows 7/8 had a pirate version of the OS?

I'm almost dead certain Microsoft will pick up on a pirate version. Particularly with Windows 10 where it has its tentacles in every nook and cranny of the OS.

I remember when I upgraded to Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 in 2015 may be. Recently I am getting all the updates of Windows 10 freely and my windows is still now activated and working just fine. But when Microsoft released Windows 10 they said they will keep it free for 1 year if anyone wants to upgrade from the previous version of Windows 7 or Windows 8 / 8.1. However I think the deal ended on 2016 and it's no longer FREE. Although you can checkout this page if you still want to have a FREE upgrade of Windows 10. I believe you. It was a pain when i had to upgrade to windows 10, and it erased all linux distro if you have dual boot in the disk (aargh). Took me several hours to update and several days to get an stable desktop (software upgrades too). As developer, i has many tools for work that i needed to update too.

Win 7 was great, still great. Sadly, It's slowly disappearing.
