Worst web hosting providers you have used?

We`ve all had bad experiences with web hosting providers in the past. Personally I do not mind a little downtime now and again. But frequent downtime really gets on my nerves and poor support what sometimes has taken weeks to resolve.

Paid hosting you expect a certain level of support, even if it`s very cheap hosting, cheap hosting providers often massively oversell their services which can be expected.

What are your experiences with bad web hosting providers?

I've had hosts that just shutdown and no word from them on what happened.

I've had paid web hosts that tried to sell my work and lied about it when I confronted them, even though I had a nice long trail of them posting about it on forums and message boards that connected them to the crime. I didn't pursue it legally, but I did tell them to stop it.

Great topic DJB! I periodically check up on Web hosting providers, just for fun and out of curiosity, so the last one I checked out was:

http://www.000webhost.com/

How I landed with them I was following discussions in a hacker forum, and the hacker I was following recommended the above host for Website space for hacker Websites. So out of curiosity thought I should see how it works.

It's one of those semi-automated Websites with Big Brother (not unlike our banking institutions) letting you get your space quite fast, and one only then learns how limited the features of their cPanel and Fantastico auto installer really are. It looks very impressive when one first browsed through all of the features, but when one actually used them, I bumped into limitations all of the time. I abandoned the project at the point where I was unable to FTP my files to the Website space. FileZilla kept timing out even with the smallest of files.

I'd say it's just a gimmick to get someone to sign up for their paid service. With that kind of gimmick they would be the last place I'd like to sign up with for free space.

The only thing I discovered now when I was reliving my experience, is that they are somehow linked with WIX. I quite like some of WIX's templates:

Hostgater are not a very good web hosting provider, they offer you very big web hosting packages, but they have filesize limitations. Their support ticket response times are very slow.

Only good thing I have to say about them is that they are cheap.

astahost is my worst one , p2h type and most of the posts were trashed for no reason , When I insist to know why it was because posts must be for astahost exclusive and the tutorials I used to post were not marked with their name
I used to post photoshop tuts there and it was very good :(
after a couple of months they removed my hosting account without warning and no backup
Then they referred me to a paid service to get a backup !

@HellSing
I had a different experience with 000WebHost's - they're features are good and I didn't find any real limitations, but the issue I had with them is that there servers are soooo overpacked that the speed can be slow and your site will go down many times throughout the day.

It has very low uptime / reliability.

Am certain that must be the reason that I could not FTP my Website to the space on their service. Well if they can get that fixed, they'll probably be in good shape. Wonder what their paid service would be like?

They won't fix the uptime since it's in their best interests to get people on their and then to give them a reason to get premium hosting. They don't want to offer you great free hosting because there's no profit in it.

Exactly what I thought. However, instead of getting me interested to go for Premium, I wanted to get as far away as possible from them.

The problem with a lot of free hosts is that spammers and phishers abuse the system. The amount of phishing sites that get created - I'd bet 50% of daily signups on these hosts is from people trying to phish twitter and facebook accounts.

True. Like that hacker who recommended in his tutorial to use 000WebHost for hacking. So can imagine plenty of hackers sharing space on the server. :p

I hate web host that has firewall block when you forget the password in Cpanel. They should just put forgot password instead of blocking our ip.

I haven't come across that yet in my free website space life, so am relieved that hasn't happened to us yet. Would be awesomely annoying. Got a small taste of that during my holiday, when I traveled from the UAE where I am resident to Vancouver, Canada. And for about every e-mail account I had, I had to authenticate them with a captcha and with Skype a code that was sent to my e-mail address. I know this is for the safety of my account, but just doesn't go well with my impatient personality.

Yes it's annoying I am in the middle of configuring my file then suddenly it went down. but honestly their hosting is really reliable but of course I need hosting that will not annoyed and blocked me. so I am waiting my site to propagate in gigalicious hosting so I can start again. hopefully gigalicious will do that.

I think ppl offer unlimited because they just wanna sound cool. Who would even take up "unlimited" space and bandwidth??
