This happened many many years ago, maybe adobe may have came up with a patch for Reader since then.
I haven't check and it doesn't affect or concern me much because I use Linux nowadays.
Sometimes the malware is an EXE embedded in pdf and they autorun when you open the file.
Of course linux isn't 100% virus-proof, that's why when I come across questionable pdf's I upload it to virustotal.com

A quick search on google will give you dozens of results about this issue.
